Baby/ dog gate help!

Hi
we visit my mum who is in her 70’s once a week. We take our greyhound who has a habit of going upstairs and finding a comfy bed to sleep on!
There’s no door to stop her, Infact we would go upstairs and sit with her while having a chat!
We’ve sat downstairs for a few weeks and shut in the dining room but bring in an enclosed room feels a bit imposing, won’t be any good in summer . The dog isn’t really a jumper and would be not left unattended by the gate.

Recently the dog injured its leg and is advised to not use stairs. We have no stairs in our bungalow so it’s no issue at home

I’m looking for a pressure stair gate that my mother will be able to fit by herself (no tools or super strength needed) and will be able to take down while we are not there.
Ive seen reviews on Amazon where people install the pressure gate and it needs a spanner every time it’s moved, or once moved it can’t be put back without a hassle
my mum doesn’t pick her feet up so the option to remove it and replace it easily is of importance. Also I feel a bit crap for imposing a stair gate in someone else’s house for a short visit.

Can’t you leave the dog at home?

DappledThings · 19/04/2025 20:52

My in-laws got a new gate just today that's brilliant. You just pick it up and move it, it's a supported decorated wooden stand. Company called Go Sausage.

You can get gates that are designed for the top of stairs that don't have a bottom bar as that would be a trip hazard at the top?

This is great. I’ll try the stair gate I ordered first. As another factor is my father who has become distant and won’t speak to anyone has movement issues and easily dementia, so picking this up and putting back in place maybe an issue with him. Thank you

It’s for the bottom of the stairs. It’s going up then that can cause injury

No. The point is it’s always been to improve the dog socially by visiting other places

I know, but if the issue is that your mum might trip on the bottom bar you can use one that's designed for the top at the bottom.

But that doesn’t have to include her home. Social outings can be where there are different people. Eg bars or cafe or dog friendly shops etc.

Candles88 · 20/04/2025 11:07

If you find a good one, please update! I need one too 😂

Thanks for your help but this isn’t a solution for our problem
I’m specifically asking for a way to block the gate

What about one of those retractable fabric gates?

Oh I see what you mean thanks

I made a makeshift dog stair gate with sturdy cardboard and self adhesive Velcro dots. If your dog’s not a chewy puppy it shd b fine. Then u have no tripping bar and it’s cheap as chips.

This the the safety 1st off Amazon about £30
my mum has used the pressure part at the top, this holds it in place. While this means it doesn’t “lock” she said it’s not like a child, the dog won’t pull the gate, it’s simply to block the stairs. Our dog I have never known to jump as is not something greyhounds really do. So I think this will suffice as it’s only temporary
there’s dog stoppers online that are cheap and it’s basically a board on legs. This would have been my other option but my father who has early dementia may move this or attempt to step over it

Thank you! So no screws needed?

No it’s a pressure gate, held in place by pushing against the sides of the stairs. As you see my mum hasn’t attached it using the full instructions just the pressure at the top, there will be pressure bits at the bottom which would make the gate able to lock. But I was just looking for a way to block the stairs as my greyhound goes up stairs fast and has this possible injury.
we are waiting for the anti inflammatory to stop and see if the limp returns, in the meantime I don’t wish to risk it
so long as she doesn’t try to jump it should be ok,
and this is fine for my mum to fit and remove when we go
it’s also suitable for my father to use as he’s in early dementia and doesn’t have to do anything except push it open. So I think we’ve found a sort of solution
if you wanted to pressure fit it correctly then the lock would engage.
if not at the bottom it has a catch to make it 1 or 2 way opening, so if you closed those then it would effectively lock
sorry that was a very long answer
