Dog insurance

Where do I start?

Pug, nearly 7. Only claims are an ear infection and got attacked by another dog which got infected. I have paid for treatment for another ear infection.

Quotes are nearly £100 per month with current insurer.

Too many bad reviews for Waggle the cheapest company.

Who are you with and why?

Unfortunately, that's about the going rate these days - particularly if you have a breed that is known to have serious health issues (sorry!).

FWIW, I am with Pet Plan for my four Goldies and they have been excellent - never failed to pay out (that being said, mine are relatively healthy - eldest dog is expensive, but she has mild arthritis - so that might be why). They aren't cheap though - and are known to not be cheap but it's worth it for the peace of mind that the chances of them paying out are higher than other insurance companies.

I have £15K cover for each of them.

£79 for the youngest (2)
£100 for the next one (5)
£110 for the next (10)
£180 was the latest renewal quote for the eldest (13 a few weeks ago)

Ultimately, as they get older you have to make the decision as to whether you're better off saving the money and if something happens making the tough choices. Even at £180, that's still only £2,160 over the year. If she needed a major operation i'd be looking at 4-5 times that so, to me, it's worth it.

With Petplan for the youngest 2. From experience they are the best at paying and provide great customer service (including a free phone number for vet advice). Not the cheapest by any means, but premiums don't tend to go up too much each year. With Many Pets for the older 2. One has a pre-existing injury, so harder to move companies, the other is too old to get insurance with most other companies as a new customer. These are cheaper, and to be fair, have always paid out for claims without too much issue. You do hear rumours about the company being in debt though, so not sure i could recommend them. Insurance is expensive (!), but i wouldn't be without it in times of need.

I also think £100pm for a 7 year old pug is about right (sorry!). Obviously, unless it's only very basic cover with a low £ payout.

8 year old spaniel here, albeit with top level insurance, and that's just gone to £220pm.

I’m with Napo- have had no problems with them paying my vet direct this year for a broken leg which came to £8/9000. I’m paying (until renewal!) £40 a month for lifetime cover- waiting to see what it goes up to now. My friends also just claimed for her dog & had no trouble. They paid the vet direct on the day they claimed for both of us. I have a link for a £30 voucher if anyone takes out a policy (please delete this if it’s not allowed)
