Kitten wanted cheap as possible in Lancashire/Manchester

Hi

My sister is looking for a kitten for my nieces. They have been after a pet for ages and my sister has finally agreed on a cat. We have been looking all day and the cheapest we can find are those in the loot and they start at £40.

My sister is on her own and cant afford much but it would go to a loving home and the girls are so excited about getting one but at this rate they will be waiting a long time.

Does anyone know where I might get one?

Thanks!

Frankly ifshe can't afford £40 for a kitten, she can't afford to get one spayed, she can't afford ot if it gets injured and she'd be better off without one.

beaniesteve · 12/05/2008 20:33

Cats protection league? Or RSPCA shelters?

Disenchanted · 12/05/2008 20:33

Thats a bit harsh colditz!

If shes on her own then she will probably be intitled to PDSA treatment, who will spay your cat and also help with emergency medical treatment.

Cat insurance can also be bought very cheaply these days.

nailpolish · 12/05/2008 20:34

£40 is just the beginning

try £80 for neutering

monthly flea and 3 monthly worm treatments

food

Disenchanted · 12/05/2008 20:34

Beanie, we looked into adopting a cat a while back and they all required a £50 adoption fee.

colditz · 12/05/2008 20:42

Hey I'm on my own too! I'm poor too! And not long ago I had to leave my other kitten with the RSPCA because she had escaped after I'd had her 36 hours and was injured - likely to cost £500. It's can and does happen. I could not afford that vet's bill, and I lost my cat because of it!

I have another cat - who courtesy of the RSPCA is chipped and snipped - because people on low incomes do get help, but it would have been far far better to not bother in the first place. I didn't think it through, and I really wish I had. I will look after my cat until the day she dies, but I'm not going to pretend she isn't costing me a small fortune in wormers, frontline, food etc and she's not even innocculated and never will be.

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 12/05/2008 20:52

my sister is on incapacity and would be entitled to help from RSPCA.

Its not her fault thats shes ill and her dh f*cked off for a younger woman.

Bloody ell!

Check your local Cats Protection League. They neuter / worm / vaccinate all cats & ask for a 'recommended' fee.

BabiesEverywhere · 12/05/2008 20:55

Agree with PP, cheapest cats are RSCPA cats who are already neutered, vaccinated and blood tested before adoption.

BabiesEverywhere · 12/05/2008 20:56

RSCPA/Cat Protection/Other Local cat charity

colditz · 12/05/2008 20:57

No of course it's not her fault, and I am sorry to hear she's ill.

I apologise for bringing my own issues to this thread. It'#s actually not your sister's problem about my cat so I will butt outski. I hope she gets a male

LuckySalem · 12/05/2008 20:59

RSPCA/Cat protection etc etc. Honestly though (and i'm probably going to get shot for this) if she can't afford to pay £40 for a kitten, should she be having an animal at all? It costs alot to look after cats (mine cost around £40 a month to feed, worm etc etc)

LuckySalem · 12/05/2008 21:00

Cp - just read your msg (my own fault for not reading whole threads)

I'm still sticking by what I said she needs to evaluate whether she can afford that much money but i'm sorry to hear about her troubles.

bluenosesaint · 12/05/2008 21:06

Definitely Cats Protection/RSPCA is your best bet.

We got our 6 month old male from Cats Protection - they were brilliant there and made sure that he was totally suited to us and thet we were totally suited to him!

They neutered him too for a small fee. We arranged our own vaccinations.

Sadly he no longer lives with us (he got a better offer a couple of years ago and ran off to eat kippers with an old lady down the way)

Good luck to your sis

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 12/05/2008 21:08

There was a time when you could get a non pedigree cat/dog for free if you could offer a good home. I think that people have become greedy and I have been shocked at the prices people are charging. I used to breed/train/show/judge dogs and own persian cats and accept that you have to pay for pedigree. But cross breeds and mongrels?

I also accept that it costs to own a pet. But when money is tight every penny matters and a big upfront payment is putting a lot of poorer yet very kind and worthy families out of the market.

You can get help with vets bills if you are on a low income and also buying a few tins of food/litter weekly is not noticed but a lot of people cant afford a £60-£90.

I will try the RSPCA thanks ladies.

If you have a PDSA clinic near you they sometimes have unwanted pets on their noticeboards.
