If your remaining piggy is aware of the passing, please remove her friend so she doesn't become distressed.

It's good she knows, it really helps her understand. I'm so sorry for your loss x

Leave her a while, when she starts ignoring you'll know she's done her good byes. That's what we were told with the rabbits. So sorry for your loss.

i don’t know the answer but it’s not going to hurt to leave for a few hours to see if the other starts to move away. I would provide plenty of cosy hides as they are likely to be fairly skittish on their own

TheThreeMiracles · 22/02/2025 09:18

Thank you your reply's, they are really snuggled together xx

Oh my. That’s heartbreaking I’m so sorry. it’s been a while since I had mine but the previous advice is right there will come a time when she moves away and then you can move the body.
I knew it was old age with mine so one thing I did was to get as many blankets and fleeces and scent them with the body. I then kept them in plastic bags and used one a day just for reassurance. Until I’d been able to pair up again.

Sorry for your loss. One of my cats was put to sleep last week. His sister stayed cuddled up with him, licking him, for four hours. It was heartbreaking. But at teatime she left him and went to eat, so we moved his body. She’s been fine. They need to grieve however they want. It helps them adapt.

@Honeyroar what a beautiful photo I'm so sorry for your loss ❤️

Thank you all so much for your comments, I phoned my mum ( yes at the ripe old age of 37 🫣 ) to come to mine and help, we left the guinea pigs together for a little while and then gave the living one a cuddle whilst my mum wrapped our baby in a blanket, my mum does it so lovely, my little 7 year old asked to hold the piggy and say goodbye which absolutely broke me, we've buried her in our garden, our other guinea pig is looking really lost but also having lots of cuddles, thank you for the advise and caring words it makes it so much easier! Xx

I’m so glad they were able to do that. Did you bring him home from the vets or did the vet come to you?

No he was pts at home. We probably paid double, but I thought he was too sore to be put into a cat carrier and do a 45 min journey to the vets. And it was so peaceful. He never knew anything about it and all our other animals got to see him. It was worth every penny, even if we are broke for the rest of the month. He’s now buried with other beloved pets in our little pet cemetery field at the bottom of the garden.

That's very sad, we lost a few last year (currently have 6 adults and 2 babies, all girls). I don't know what the answer is as ours were never alone when their friends passed, but I think I would leave her a few hours and then remove her. Give the remaining girl lots of love and cuddles.

I know it's too soon to think about it right now, but if you decide not to get her a new friend and you can get to South Yorkshire we always take in any that need a new home so they aren't alone and she would have a lovely life and lots of love. They live outdoors with the run of the whole back garden during summer.

We made the mistake of burying the first girl we lost and something dig her up which was very distressing for my children. We cremated them at home and made a little commemorative stone for the garden since then.

Guinea pigs are such lovely funny little creatures with individual characters, and I'm so very sorry for you losing her.

Honeyroar · 22/02/2025 13:03

You have to dig fairly deep. Probably 3-4’. We always plant a Christmas tree on top, which possibly helps. We’ve buried about 30 pets over the years and never had anything messed with (we’re v rural). The only one we had cremated was a horse.
