Ds has his heart set on getting a rabbit. has even said he's saving up his pocket money to buy one.

I am an animal lover and generally have never resisted having any types of animals (apart from rats or reptiles) but for some reason I feel a bit resistant to having a rabbit.

firstly am afraid of urban foxes coming in at night and killing it, plus have never had a rabbit before so not sure what is involved in keeping one.

Am aware they need inoculations/to be checked for fly strike, but what else? will it dig up my garden? will it be eaten by foxes? Have heard that minni lops are the best to get on the sociability scale.

So go on, convince me one way or the other so that I can either tell ds we can buy a rabbit or tell him to forget it.

they are harder work than guinea pigs!
We have both. The rabbits have been moved onto a paved area as they kept digging (she dug herself a burrow about 6 foot long!)

We have one of each (the male is neutered) I would recommend you get it vaccinated for Mixi as we lost 2 of our thru that.

They are quite messy and not very cuddly. They can be cuddly but then do tend to struggle as you go to put them back and can scratch quite badly with back feet.

not had any trouble with foxes but they are completely enclosed. They do need to be checked regularly as our male in particular gets a very messy rear end.

ours are lops. Males are usually friendlier which has been true of all our rabbits. however you are usually advised to get 2 as they do like company.

We won't be replacing ours when they go to the great meadow in the sky although we have had several over the years. IMO guinea pigs are sweeter and easier although don't live as long

we have 2, and we never pick them up as they kick out and wriggle (mini lops) they let us stroke them..

they love to eat my plants especially the ones with flowers on...

I love them but they are harder work then i thought, they poo loads, i put clean newpaper in there run every day, and they do use it for the toilet which helps....

bloody rabbits. we have thousands of the bloody things wild in the garden. its like sodding teletubbyland round here (apart from all the flowers have been eaten by the sodding rabbits.)

cute tho.

Our rabbit is adorable - beautiful and soft and fluffy, affectionate and friendly. But yes he is hard work. More than the guinea pigs, hamsters, cats, fish and snails all together. He needs a big hutch, but he also has a pen to graze in the garden, and he jumped out so we had to make a lid, then he burrowed out so we had to make a base. He got lonely so we got him a guinea pig friend. Which he liked. Then they looked cold in winter so ended up in our living room for a couple of winter months (and yes they do make it smell like a stable). Now he's back outside again. But he wants to be inside. He loves coming in to romp around the living room and complains about going back outside again.

So yes, lovely but a bit too much work.
