Surely cats have evolved not to need suncream? PMSL at this thread!

Sorry, it was just so apt that a smallwhitecat came along at that very moment and answered the OP!

We had a lovely all-white cat when I was little. She got run over

fryalot · 07/05/2008 15:42

my white cat had skin cancer on her ears and had to have them amputated. She lived for several years after that, but I would always advise anyone to put suncream on their cat's white ears.

Seriously, tis a recognised problem.

The problem that we had was she would be out all day, so I would put the suncream on and she would disappear for the day, so she still got skin cancer.

It is ok to use kids' sunblock - as high a factor as you can get. Reapply it as often as you possibly can, you can't overdose them. Get a waterproof one if you can as well, because the first thing they will do is try to clean it off.

You really, really, really must do this, forget everyone who laughs at you. I will send you pics of my earless cat if you want something to shut them up.

(and my poor mog went and had an accident and had one of her legs amputated as well - it got so that every time she went to the bloody vet they chopped something off. dp said we should have named her "lucky" )

I used kids' sunblock on my late, lovely cat. She had a few bad bouts of sunburn in her later years and it can be really nasty.

Now I feel sad remembering her.

fryalot · 07/05/2008 16:15

smugmum - I too am missing my cat.

clayre - my dear, beloved cat looked just like yours (and that is some black eye your boy has!!!!)

Now I'm wondering - another baby? another cat? hmm.....

clayre · 07/05/2008 16:17

the black eye was my mum, well she didnt do it on purpose, she was looking after him for the first time ever when we were in the middle of moving house and ended up in A&E!

Shes my sisters cat, my cat is a tortishell explosion

fryalot · 07/05/2008 16:19

yeah, my mum gave my ds a black eye the first time she looked after him as well.

Not quite as spectactular as your boy's, but a black eye nevertheless!

ditavonteesed · 07/05/2008 17:11

He has been out all day with nothing on, I didn't realise it was quite that important, I knew I had to do it when it got hot, I shall never miss it again, he is in and out all day so plenty of chances to reapply.

Also worth putting the cream onto white/pink noses too, though harder to keep on there. The same skin cancers can also affect that area, though thankfully less common as treatment is a lot harder at that site.

Owners of multicoloured cats where ears are white or partly white should also put sun cream on these pale parts too.

NutterlyUts · 07/05/2008 20:24

You need zinc free and over factor 40spf according to my boss at work

ditavonteesed · 08/05/2008 08:30

Cat is creamed up and out playing, that wasn't as difficult as i imagined.
Just need to remeber to do dc asnd myself as well now.
