Didn't even know that they existed. What kind of pet is it? I imagine you'd need a completely different one for say a Donkey or a Guinea Pig?

Is this a thing? And quite, what sort of pet?

Just looked at Amazon and blow me down, it is a thing!

I have one for my small dog. She needs regular checks and she's very anxious at the vet so they can't get a reliable reading. I use a specific veterinary monitor but to be honest, I think I could have just used a veterinary cuff with a monitor I already had in the house. The advantage of having a separate monitor for her is that it keeps track of the readings without mixing them up with anyone else's but I'm not sure that's worth the extra cost. I think I paid around £70 which seemed like a lot, but then again the vet charges around £45 a time for something that's inherently unreliable.

I got the impression from googling that reliability is more about how it's used than the equipment itself. There are a couple of things to bear in mind about positioning that aren't immediately obvious. You can find videos or ask a vet nurse to show you.

I'd also recommend introducing it very gradually, eg put it beside the dog then put it away, touch the dog with the cuff then put it away, loosely wrap the cuff briefly, wrap it for longer, wrap and fasten it, partially inflate it etc. If they get anxious about the procedure you may as well not bother. It didn't take more than about 10 minutes to desensitise mine and now I can get a reading while she's sitting next to me on the sofa and she doesn't even seem to notice it's happening.l

Be wary. Cheap bp monitors will not be accurate. You need a veterinary specific one and they are very expensive. You would also need to know how/where to place the cuff, what position to have your pet in, how many readings to get an median etc..

It's a cat, the vets have a special blood pressure monitor. I have since asked the vet and they use a suntec

Oh, if it's a cat then you would need a Doppler BP monitor for accuracy and training on how to use one. It's a bit tricky unless your cat is a model patient!

Thank you all very much for helping, I appreciate it. My cat is a gentle soul and will be ok having his blood pressure taken. I hope you all have a relaxing Sunday.
