Im going to get a kitten. I think te cat is due in a few weeks. Obviously i wont have a kitten till its 8 weeks old and weaned. I was just wondering what gender would be recommended. All opinions appreciated.

Well we've got one of each and the male is definately more affectionate than the female. My parent's have one of each too and it's the same there.

I think females prefer to be more "on my terms only"

HTH

Thats how my mums cats are. The male is really affectionate.
Do you think a male generally have a better temprament (sp?) with a young child?

I just had a DD (January) the female cat (Lucky) ignores her (unless we lay her on top of her, lol) and the male cat (Salem) gets up every half hr or so to check on her if she's in her bouncer. If she's on the floor we have to be careful he doesn't lie on her cos he wants to rub against her etc.

i have a male kitten and he is soo affectionate towards us and the DC, he is a little lovepot....my mum has a female kitten and she is the total opposite

shelleylou · 02/05/2008 22:45

Ahh thats sweet.
When we are at my parents Candy (female) generally stays out of ds's way but will let him stoke her if shes in the mood to be fussed. Tiggy (male) will go and check on ds when he was tiny no just lies there and lets him pet him.

I werent sure that whether that was just my mums cats temparment. Ds is 18months soi i want him to be able to fuss the cat. I want him to have a pet and i like cats and would prefer one to a dog. I know im going to have to watch him with it so he doesnt hurt it but he is usually very gentle.

My male cat was a beatiful affectionate loving cuddlepot and I miss him dearly.

Cuddling my female is like trying to love a hessian bag of staples.

SmugColditz · 02/05/2008 22:47

My friend is mad cat woman, and she insists males are much much nicer.

LuckySalem · 02/05/2008 22:49

My DP plays really quite rough with our Salem and he scratches the crap outta him in retaliation, BUT so far he's never even stretched his nails out at DD, I know when she's big enough to crawl and pull his tail i'll have to be abit more careful but i'm not worried, esp as he ONLY scratches DP, I can muck around with him and he's never once scratched me on purpose.

shelleylou · 02/05/2008 22:49

Looks like ill be getting a male then. I've always had cats as pets growing up and the odd dog but have always prefered cats, so much more affectionate.
Sorry about your male colditz

Im sure that they know its a baby and they dont know any better. Tiggy looks at me as if to say 'hes annoying me now get him to leave me alone' has nver scratched him does with other people though. Just slightly pays him with his paw without claws. Thats enough for ds to leave him alone, doesnt like it at all

Hi,
I'd say female. All our she-cats have been cuddly and soppy, and they don't wander so far. Even a neutered tom has a much wider territory than a female.

expatinscotland · 04/05/2008 00:31

I prefer a male.

BUT our cat now is a female and she's very cuddly.

shelleylou · 04/05/2008 00:32

I'm not to worried about them wandering, i live in a quite area really. So i havent got the worry of certain things happening to it. Only downside is i might lose the birds from my garden but that is far outweighed by the looks ds will have on his face. He absolutely adores cats.
Ive got a bit of time to make my decision my friend has asked me to let her know sometime tomorrow so she can put my order in lol.
Thanks mymble

Ive had both in the past some females have been quite cuddly but others haven't. I surpose it all depends on the cat.
