Kitten or six-month-old cat?

We can get a six-month old from the cats' home now or wait a bit and get a nine-week-old kitten. What would you do? I love the idea of a tiny bundle of fur but it means waiting. The older cat we could have tomorrow. Is it worth the wait?

Yeah I would opt for one that was already trained and passed most of the destroying stage.

The six-month-old would also be neutered so that would be one less job to do. Are they still really cute and fluffy at 6 months?

the 6mo can control it's claws too so you get less scratches to your body when you go near/pick it up etc

A cat isn't a fully grown cat til 12m anyway so she is still a kitten

If you go for the six-mth-old make sure he/she is socialised and friendly, because with cats their personality can be pretty much set by that age. It can be difficult, if not impossible, to change a timid/nervous/stand-offish cat whereas kittens are more open to change. Having said that, we had our last cat when he was about 5/6mths and he blossomed into a gorgeous pet. Sadly he went missing.

We've told Battersea we want a confident cat. We've got two DSs aged 5 and 3 so they wouldn't let us take a timid one.

Get both! Nothing more fun and crazy than having a couple of kittens chasing each other up the curtains

We have a cat!
He's black and white and about a year old (he was a stray so no-one knows for sure)
Battersea wouldn't let us have any of the younger cats we chose but offered us him. He's a bit older than we would have liked but he's lovely (although he's already nipped me twice). The boys are over the moon with him
Not sure I'd get another rescue cat. Battersea really make you jump through hoops to take an animal home but I suppose they have to make sure he's going to the right home.
We've named him Jasper for now.
It's so exciting! I haven't had a pet for 10 years since my last cat was killed on the road.

Where's his photo, then?

LyraSilvertongue · 04/05/2008 22:50

No pics yet. he did come and sit on my lap this evening which is a good sign that he's starting to settle in. And he purrs when he sees me.
