Hi hope you can help. I have been with my wife for 25 years she doesn't love me anymore and wants to make a fresh start so I have moved out. But I am nowhere near ready to move on Anyway I'm really lonely when the kids aren't here I work full time so wouldn't be fair to get a dog. Are there any smaller low maintenance pets that show affection I could cuddle ?

What about a rat? Dont laugh. My friend has two. They’re very affectionate. Also, clever and love to be cuddled.

Failing that… a cat? If you have a cat flap they’re pretty independent. When I worked long hours and shifts, it was lovely to come home to my cat who’d been out all day and would then snuggle up on the sofa.

Thanks for the reply I didn't even consider a rat to be fair I never imagined they'd be affectionate. Nothing against cats but always been a dog person don't know why I can't be both

A cat. They are great company and there are so many needing homes.

TheCanaryInThePurpleSkirt · 22/12/2024 18:24

I had various cats. Now a golden retriever. To be fair, you (as you say) can’t have a dog.

I’ll bet your kids would love a rat (or two)!

DancefloorAcrobatics · 22/12/2024 18:24

A house rabbit?

AltitudeCheck · 22/12/2024 18:26

Depending on your house, a friendly adult cat could be perfect.

Yes. Alternatively, a bunny!

Cats are fabulous and brilliant company. But if you want one specifically for cuddles, you need to visit a rescue and be very clear about that - and even then, there’s no guarantee that any cat you adopt will be up for cuddles with you. It’s not personal, it’s just cats.

Rats might be a safer bet.

My two cats are extremely affectionate. One is both a skilled hunter and a soppy lap cat, and the other isn’t so much of a lap cat but very affectionate in other ways.

Aworldofmyown · 22/12/2024 18:31

If you consider rats please do your research. Find a good breeder, not a pet shop. They need large cages!
Fantastic pets, very sweet.

Guinea pigs, they make the cutiest noises, are excited to see you and low maintenance, they can live like house rabbits indoors and live an outdoor running nicer weather.

Just don't small cage them. They have bags of personality and there are many rescues.

OnTheJourneyOnwards · 22/12/2024 18:47

My cat is super friendly. He loves to sit on the sofa with me and sit on my lap. Loves being picked up and cuddled.

But not all cats are like this.

I rescued him, so I knew his personality before I adopted him.

Very simple to care for, low maintenance. He's a domestic short hair so minimal brushing needed. And he's not super hairy either, doesn't get fur all over the furniture.

I've also had Syrian hamsters before when I was working. And they are so cute and funny! They are happy being held and their fur is soooo soft. Absolutely recommend a hamster if you're working. It's impossible to be sad when you're holding a hamster 🐹

Siamese cats ,most are absolute people lovers , they also meet you at the door and play fetch as well as many dogs .

TheCanaryInThePurpleSkirt · 23/12/2024 13:31

I once had a black and white mog. He used to play catch! People didn’t believe me, til they saw it 😊. Also, at the end of a shift (nursing at the time) I’d put my key in the door and immediately hear the cat flap go. He’s come running in and throw himself on the floor for a belly rub. His best trick was walking around the corner alongside me and a pram to Sainsburys. He’d wait outside, with all the dogs, til I came out.

He’d wait outside was really precious and I was heartbroken when he died.

Fundays12 · 23/12/2024 13:36

A rescue cat would be ideal. Older cats tend to need much less attention and are pretty independent. Kittens do need someone at home and lots of care. If you go to a cat rescue you will soon find the cat that decides you should be owned. Lol cats really don't have owners but servants. However most are easy going, good company and easy to care for. I have had cats all my life and found neutered older male cats tend to be the most affectionate.
