House bunny - what to ask in advance?

Hello! We've been offered a year old, litter trained, very cuddly, non aggressive, house rabbit. The family are moving abroad and can't take pets. I had rabbits growing up but they were definitely outside animals so this is a new situation for me!

Wondering what questions I should be asking at this stage (before we've committed).

Here's what I have so far

  • does she chew?
  • remind me what breed she is
  • how did they litter train and what's the routine?
  • is she up to date with vaccinations?
  • has she been spayed?
  • do they have a pet insurer they'd recommend?
  • usual diet?
  • has she always been a solo bunny? Any reason for that?

Anything I've missed? Anyone have experience with a large floppy house rabbit they'd like to share?

Yup...

how can’t you “be sure” of this
but know basically nothing else at all!

You missed the most important OP.. what's her favourite treat 😍 one of mine would do anything for a banana chip!
Also anything she doesn't digest well- some are sensitive to certain veggies, it's good to know if they have noticed anything.
Vet recommendations if you live nearby.
Is she chipped? Some do at the same time as spaying- you'll need to update details.
Enjoy ❤️

They're friends from school. So, sure as I can be without having a deep rooted mistrust of everyone and everything. We've met the bunny once, but didn't ask a lot of questions. I don't tend to enter people's houses and start quizzing them about their pets. Then this week they mentioned at the gates that she can't move with them and they were looking for a new home. So offered is a stretch, wasn't offered to us specifically, but bunny needs a new home and we're considering it. Going to chat it through with the current owner this evening so wanted to research what questions to ask and what to consider when deciding.

Ah excellent questions!! Thank you! Yes if I was going to a new home I would want to be sure they had my fave snacks for sure.

I used to have houserabbits, they're the best.

Does she chew is a redundant question. All rabbits chew. They need to as their front teeth constantly grow and you need to ensure you provide enough nibbles for them to chew. I used to cover everything with cardboard that I didn't want them to chew.

We used to have a stairgate to keep them out of areas of the house we didn't want them to go in.

I'd ask what she does at bedtime. Some bunnies like to be closed into their cage and some just use their cage as a "safe spot" during the day and will keep watch in a doorway or at the top of the stairs or similar at night time.

Ask what her favourite treats are for sure! And if she likes running around outside you could get her a rabbit run for warmer days than today so she can mow your lawn for you (-4 here).

Most rabbits are companion animals so it's unusual to find one that's solo.

I had the most delightful loving house rabbit rescued from a glass fish tank where a pet shop was unable to sell him. He was quickly litter trained and used to dance around my feet in circles when I returned from work.

The only downsides were he used to chew wires (I had to cover them all) and when I got a new boyfriend would be jealous and stand outside the bedroom door!

Happy memories of a great bun.

They then chew the cardboard instead. ;)

Have they neutered the bunny? That's important because un-neutered rabbits will spray everywhere.

Allmarbleslost · 21/11/2024 10:02

We have two house bunnies but they don't have the run of the whole house because they chew everything. We have bunny proofed and confined them to one room unless they are very closely supervised.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 21/11/2024 10:04

Ah we had the most wonderful rabbit. He lived outside but was allowed run of the garden and could come in and out of the house at will - we would leave the back door open for him most of the time. If it was closed he would stand up on his hind legs at the door and look in until we noticed him. Never chewed anything, never caused any trouble. He was an excellent bunny.

Sorry, nothing further to add.

Tcateh · 21/11/2024 10:14

I've had two.
One chewed, the other didn't. She chewed thru a phone cable and got an electric shock and burnt her whiskers and front teeth.

How she survived I do not know.

Anyhow, having a secure run/hutch at floor level in the kitchen worked for me.
Had a litter tray in there, and was secured in there overnight.

Had run of the kitchen if I was out.

When I was home they had the run of the house and did zoomies everywhere.

They did have poop accidents so you'll be on the lookout for those.

They also do these soft stinky poos which they eat straight from their buns to help digestion. I never knew this when I had an outdoor bunny.

Only found out when one of mine was sat on the sofa next to me doing this 😄

I think knowing the routine of the bunny is the most important to help settle in.

Oh also, do you have other pets and how old are kids if you have any.
