Cats/kittens & breads..

I almost constantly seem to get mice in my kitchen. I had a cat a few years ago and didn't suffer with mice at all then but the cat we had didn't like us very much and adpoted a neighbour.

I'm seriously considering getting another cat but not really sure. then it's cat or kitten. breeder or rspca.. etc

..help me decide.. it's dd's birthday during summer and half toying with getting a kitten and passing it off as a birthday present.. so I have about 2 months to decide.

Breads? [mind boggles]

wrinklytum · 25/04/2008 23:27

Sorry,I thought this thread was about cats and bread!!!!A bizarre mix.Mine are both RSPCA moggies,if that helps

Now is the time to look for a kitten. Most are born this time of year and are ready to leave their mothers 8-10 weeks later.

MascaraOHara · 25/04/2008 23:31

sorry VVVQV, maybe I@ve had a sense of humour bypass this evening.. it was an absent minded typo. not the end of the world. You will see that I have actually managed to spell 'breed' correctly in the post.

I don't proof read.

rspca every time. Then you can feel happy for doing a good deed by rehoming one - as well as getting rid of your mice!

MascaraOHara · 25/04/2008 23:32

thanks mimzan, Ididn't know there was a 'good' time of year for kittens if that makes sense.. but does motivate me to have a serious think about it sooner rather than later.

I think you have. I shall leave you to it

BoysAreLikeDogs · 25/04/2008 23:38

Even more brownie points if you get a grown cat, they are much harder to rehome than kittens, and get DD a seperate present??

MascaraOHara · 25/04/2008 23:41

I did get an older cat from RSPCA before but it was a bit of a nightmare, she had to have a lot of work on her teeth as had been badly neglected, and had epilepsy, so used to have fits a lot and cover the kitchen in pee, which actually I didn't mind to much as I felt so sorry for her. But then decided she preffered my childless neighbours.. it's kind of put me off a little bit. I'm not completely opposed to the idea though but do have doubts about doing all that again.. it took me a week to coax her to eat and she wouldn't let dd near her (even though she seemed lovely when we first went to see her)

Aww go on, get a kitten

sushistar · 25/04/2008 23:46

Kittens can be easier in the long run cos they grow up in your family, but harder work at first!

MorocconOil · 25/04/2008 23:52

We got 2 kittens last summer and they have been so fantastic. They are such a part of the family. The DC adore them and it's mutual.

They have pooed in the house a bit but less since we got the cat flap. They steal food when they get a chance and have scratched the dining chairs, but are absolutely charming otherwise.

CountryGirl2007 · 25/04/2008 23:53

Definetly a rescue cat. you could always get an adult and a kitten, with cats I don't think an odd one or two extra really makes much difference since they don't need as much work as an extra dog would. (although I wouldn't mind either, I quite enjoy the "work" that goes along with dogs but still lol) anyway I'll shut up rambling now!

juneybean · 25/04/2008 23:58

Obviously it's always a good idea to help an older cat get a good home.

However as already said, kittens are born now, they will be needing homes too.

I wouldn't bother with a pedigree breed, a mixie can be doubly cuter, check the paper for "accidents" as they usually are "free to a good home" :D

just tempt in a local stray like i did.... actually i had a few at one point, dp has dubbed me 'the crazy cat lady'

there's a massively pregnant queen visiting our garden at the moment that i'm feeding to keep down the rat population, seems to be working.

our cat that's properly moved in with us and even moved house with us though actually brought a live mouse into the house and now refuses to catch it it's eating my kitchen sponges!
