We are considering a Weimaraner but I really have little experience of them. I would be grateful if you would let me know your experiences of these dogs. We already have a dog (collie kelpie x) who is getting on a bit now. Would like to introduce another dog into the family while our dog is around. We also have a small child so I'm really looking to see whether they are good with children.

I have only known one, so I don't know if it was a characteristic of the dog or of the breed, but it was the thickest animal I've ever met.

Very good-natured, though, and was fine with children in the 5-10 age range. It had absolutely loads of energy and needed a long run on the beach every day.

Crazy dogs, highly strung & nervy. Have met 2 which have been prescribed Prozac! Apologies to lovers of the breed, i know they're beautiful to look at. I would imagine they would require an experienced, patient owner!!

I don't own one but know several people who do, they are very boistreous dogs with a huge amount of energy who need a lot of excercise.

I would say they ae more suited to a household with older children as they may be a bit much for smaller tots.
Having said that like any breed they differ from dog to dog!

my dad has got two and they are barmy and as clever as a plank of wood!
I'm pg at the moment and there's no way DC and dogs are going to meet for a long time.
they need a good owner with bucketfulls of patience and lots of time to exercise them

We had one when I was a child and I think that generally, they are not great family pets. Ours was typical of the breed, beautiful but overly excitable. He knocked us all down many times and really needed huge walks/runs several times a day. It's possible that he would badger a smaller, older dog to death and be quite scary to little kids.

Obviously, this is only my experience but I've heard the same said by many other owners.

Thank you for your comments. Based on them I think we will end up going for a golden retriever (which was the other option). I was brought up with them so know what is involved. Thanks again

They are nice dogs but as the others have said, they are a gundog breed so need a lot of exersize, so do goldens. at least an hour a day and plenty of training.

Would you consider a rescue dog? There isn't really much point in going for a specific breed IMO unless you want to show. Plenty of friendly dogs in rescue that make an ideal pet for anyone even if they don't have crufts winners in their bloodlines!

Complete and utter loons ! My mother and father in law have always had them, lovely to look at ,but I wouldnt touch one with a bargepole. IMHO they are just too inbred. Dont laugh but whippets are supposed to be really good dogs around children,a friend had one and it was a sweetie.
