Hey all,

UK based and have a cat on a pet plan. Every month I pay for his worming (milbevet) and flea treatment (credelio) and have done for 3 years. Recently I haven't been able to pick up his meds from the vets due to lack of car and having a young baby. The cat is now about 3 weeks overdue both a wormer and flea treatment. I need to buy an over the counter equivalent of those meds from the nearby pets at home as I can't get in to my usual vets to pick up the meds and they won't send it out. Any recommendations. He is an outdoor cat who hunts and I'm worried we have a baby and the cat is now weeks overdue a wormer and flea treatment so want to sort something asap go avoid the baby catching worms. Any advice very much welcome. Basically just want to know the best over the counter substitute I can buy as I can't access his usual vetinary prescribed wormer and flea meds. Thanks!

It is against our code of professional conduct to provide advice of drugs without access to medical records and for parasitic products without a clinical examination.

There is little point treating with an OTC flea treatment , most don’t work . Can you not find anyone to pop you to the vets ? How would you manage if the cat needed a vet ?

You can often buy these from an online pharamacy to be delievered to your house.

Can you ask your vet for the prescription for you to order online?

Buy from an online pharmacy. But also, Cats can't pass worms to humans, its a different type of worm. But obviously you shouldn't give the kids access to cat poo to try that theory out.

Hey guys, I pop to the vet once a month to get his meds that's not an issue. It's just that they wanted me to bring him in for his 6 monthly health check as I'm on a pet plan with them. It's hard as they only have appointments in the evening and as I am a single parent who works it's hard to get there. I arranged childcare and booked in but wanted something to tide out cat over in the meantime as he was a few weeks overdue his wormer as the vet changed their policy and said all patients must come in for their 6 monthly check so just picking it up on the meds on the way to work as I usually do wouldn't work. Thanks all :) re the emergency I would take toddler and cat to vets in a taxi as when you single parent thats sometimes the only option unless I could find someone I trust to take care of LO while I was out or if he was at nursery :)

Hi OP. I get Frontline Plus and Drontal from an on-line pharmacy. Both work. The wormer is only once every six months.

I have a great vet, who is very happy and relaxed with this regime. I stopped my pet plan because it wasn't cost effective, and the cat hates going to the vet.

It wasn't so long ago that you didn't need prescriptions from vets.

It's not a policy change - it's the law.

I wouldn't give them a random OTC medication, just make it a priority to get them to the vets. You could pay for a pet taxi type service if you can't go yourself.

Really don't worry about being a few weeks over. Just go to the appointment and give the meds then.
