We finally bought a dog yesterday after months of looking.

He is called Mutley and is a Bullmastiff. The boys adore him and he keeps following DS2 around.

How exciting for you!

Our Miniature Schnauzer puppy was born on Sunday and we are going to visit on 18th May - we cannot wait!

Have you noticed any immediate problems or have any tips about puppy ownership? I am reading everything I can get my hands on at the moment.

hertsnessex · 25/04/2008 08:26

i have had dogs (normally staffies) all my life and lots of puppies!

he seems to be really good at the moment.

we havent bothered with paper training, i am just always outside with him (every hr or after he has woken up or after dinner). we have had 4 accidents in 2 days, so not bad going.

he is alot more confident since day1, now started mouthing - so i just walk away and give him no attention or tell him 'no' if its an object (or one of the boys!)

He wore a collar yesterday for a few hours, i think its best to get this going asap. he went for his injections and didnt even blink, and was great in the vets - although we will see what happens next time.

he is enjoying carrots for treats ans eating 3 meals a day, and i am actively going over to his food and putting my hands in the way and the boys give him his food - all helps with the 'ranking' in the pack. plus if i get a friends toddler round and they put there hands in his food he shouldnt/wouldnt go mad etc.

he isn't allowed on the sofas/beds/playroom or upstairs - havee started this from day one.

he will sit and give you his paw for food and come to you in the garden - so training starts on day one.

i also de-flead and wormed him and today im going to brush him so he is used to all of it..

obviously it is early days with this pup, but i think he is v clever and is getting to know his 'place' in the pack. fingers crossed!

i am also getting a whistle to train him and will get the boys to help with that.

good luck! sure you will be fine xx

Thanks for the advice - I will definitely be following it! I'm also really keen on establishing me, DH and DS as the pack leaders (I am with the Dog Whisperer on this!)

No doubt I will be posting when he arrives!

hertsnessex · 25/04/2008 15:59

good luck! there is always a 'natural' pecking order in a pack - its just making them realise that its the humans first!

This is one thing I wanted to do from day 1 especially as he will be 12-13stone fully grown - i don't want to fight with that over who sits on the sofa!!!!

That is one hell of a big dog! We went to Crufts this year and visited the Discover Dogs section. We knew we wanted (I wanted) a Schnauzer but my DH and DS fell head over heels in love with a Neopolitan Mastiff - a bit of difference in size there! My DS who is 2 and a half just put his arms around its waist and cuddled it for ages. I would have loved to get a big dog but we don't have a huge house and with DS being so young we wanted something we could pick up in a hurry if we need to, hopefully once I have a bit more experience we can move on to some of the big boys...

I really like mastiffs. We have a Great Dane, he once met an English mastiff in our woods, the mastiff was about an inch shorter than our dog but at least 3 times the width. They had a lot of fun together but everyone else had to keep well clear - was like watching Sumo.

hertsnessex · 25/04/2008 19:20

I can;t wait for him to 'grow up' already! he really is a little 'bully' boy - so chunky and cute! (and a pain in the arse of course!)

There were two Bullmastiffs at the dog training class I used to go to, owned by one couple. So sedate and unaware of their own strength. Enormous but cutely vulnerable looking. Hope you have a lovely time with him.

oops, enough to make my DH cry and wave goodbye to a stag weekend he was going to go on!!!

he has been really good today, i am still thinking this is the calm before the storm!!
