Cat vomited a large moving worm

My cat who is 2 has just vomited up a really large moving worm....it was absolutely disgusting. We had been away for a week abroad and had a cat sitter looking after him...I did think that it looked like his bowl hadn't been cleaned really. When we got home there was a half eaten mouse on the stairs waiting for us also which is very unusual for him to do. He has seemed okay, maybe a bit more lethargic than usual... is it tapeworm, roundworm? It looked like tagiallatelle pasta. Can we catch it? I have 2 and 4 year old. I am going to bring him to vets tomorrow to get him checked out. Poor thing has probably been in a lot of discomfort and I didn't realise

Most likely roundworm, but if flat maybe tapeworm. He will need a broad spectrum wormer - watch him as the wormers themselves can be quite harsh on their tums, so can cause sickness.

No to catching worms from your cat.

Take a photo of the worm to show your vet, they will identify it.

Thank you @schloss I took a video of it as I couldn't believe how big it was...he's never had anything like this before. Was worried as we've all been petting him lots since we got home so don't want it to passed onto the girls

Have you not been treating him regularly?

schloss · 29/09/2024 23:15

I would expect from that description it is a roundworm. They can be very big. I expect the cat will feel better now.

Even with regular treatments, sometimes it can happen the animal has or gets roundworms.

Just for info, tapeworm eggs can be seen as what looks like small bits of rice in poo, so always worth keeping an eye on it.

You can catch worms from your pets but it’s uncommon. My dad many years ago got a tapeworm from the dog. He didn’t eat pork and the dog had had a tapeworm so the doctors said it came from the dog. 🤷‍♀️

@Everestisthebest dogs and cats are meant to wormed regularly. at least every three months!! get him wormed and make sure everyone washes their hands every time they touch to cats, their litter trays and their food bowls!! better to wear disposable gloves when doing the litter trays!!

What did the Vet say @Everestisthebest?

Everestisthebest · 30/09/2024 20:31

Hi @PolaroidPrincess I asked for an appointment today but they only had one for tomorrow so bringing him in tomorrow evening. hoping everything is okay anyway. This is my first time owning my own cat so it is a learning curve! He seems okay but maybe I'm missing some signs....

I will try to remember to update this thread tomorrow!

Just to update the thread it was roundworm. They gave medication there and then and put an ointment on his head to help clear the worms out apparently. Everything else was good!
