Fed up of cat sh*tting in our garden

Ttcpph · 21/09/2024 17:31

Our garden is fully enclosed by 6 foot fences/ gates all around.
we have a dog who, I believe I should be able to be let out in our enclosed back garden without fear of him eating cat shit!

how can I stop a cat coming and shitting?!
the dog eats the poo which is disgusting, a health hazard, and I'm pregnant so worried about toxoplasmosis.

dont know who's cat it is.
I can't buy those granules as the garden is a decent size so realistically can't cover the entire area in granules/orange peel/garlic/whatever else.

its so gross, my dog comes inside with the most vile smelling breath, and it makes him ill as he has a sensitive stomach.

so frustrated. I honestly feel like unless you live in a remote area where your cat can roam without being an annoyance, it should be an indoor cat.
people would be furious if I just let me dog shit in their gardens as I walk him, without picking up. How is this any different?!
somehow it's ok for cats to just shit anywhere?!?

Get your own cat.

Ttcpph · 21/09/2024 17:35

@KirstenBlest i don't want cats, and same thing applies. - I wouldn't want it shitting in someone else's garden and being a nuisance.

My mum and dad have a motion sensor which gives off a high pitched sound to scare off cats in their garden. It seems to do the trick as cats have stopped coming in, not sure if this would be dog friendly though?

SusieBBB · 21/09/2024 17:38

Are you sure it isn’t fox poo? Our garden is full
of fox poo. Cats usually bury their poo. Why is your dog eating it anyway? Does dog eat poo?

Dabralor · 21/09/2024 17:38

Pick the shits up and throw them at the cat when it enters the garden. Or go and deposit them in the cat's own garden - see how their owners enjoy that.

Fucking despise cats that shit in gardens. Awful, some of them are as big as a small dog poo.

HighPrecisionGhosts · 21/09/2024 17:39

Does it poo in your flower beds?
You could put netting onto the flowerbeds or prickly stems to deter it.

I've cut holly branches from our tree and laid it across the veg patch which the neighbours cat uses as a toilet. Not used it since.

I can confirm that many dogs do eat cat poo. They often feel so pleased with themselves that they come and lick you. It's fucking awful.

Shesellsseashellsontheseasure · 21/09/2024 17:39

Same. I have a cat and yet the neighbours cats still use our garden like their own litter tray. I'm sick of clearing it up. My 18month old crawled in some earlier. It's disgusting

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 21/09/2024 17:39

Could the dog help you here? Provided he wouldn't attack the cat, being surprised by a big bounding barking creature might put her off, if you let him out at the times the cat comes round. You might be able to make the garden less attractive too. Cats like dry sandy earth to scratch around in and don't usually poo on grass or on to plants. If you have more ground cover plants they'd be more likely to look elsewhere a better spot.

Ttcpph · 21/09/2024 17:40

Is a battery or solar powered do you know? I have heard mixed reviews, and that some cats seem to like them?!

We solved this by putting fishing wire across all fences and gates so the cats can’t stand on the top. Held on with metal brackets a few inches above the fence. It’s worked amazingly well.

HearMeSnore · 21/09/2024 17:41

I have heard that you can get pellets of lion poop that if you scatter around your boundary, no cat will cross.

Personally I'm not sure how a garden full of lion shit is better than any other cat's. An alternative would be a motion sensitive water sprayer hooked up to your hosepipe. We had one for keeping foxes off the lawn at our old house. It did work, but remember to turn it off before putting washing out. I lost count of the times I forgot it was there and it got me.

Why do people always say this? Cats shitting in flower beds is definitely a problem or else there wouldn't be so many products to try and stop it. I found peppermint oil has helped but not feasible with a huge garden.

Ttcpph · 21/09/2024 17:43

It's definitely not a fox - it's a cat. Have seen the offender a couple of times. It seems to come really late at night, most of the time the dog is in bed.

its just done one this afternoon on the newly mowed lawn, so not just in the beds. We don't have raised bed, but all around the edge of our garden is shrubs with bark chippings. It tends to go in there, but today it decided to plant one on the lawn, just to really piss me off!

its soooo sly, we hardly notice it coming and going 😡

I THINK it’s battery, they’ve tried loads of different things through the years. My mum has a cat phobia so was demented with them in the garden!

Ttcpph · 21/09/2024 17:45

@CotswoldSleuth i might give this a go! Worth £20 for an attempt which is fairly low effort I guess!

My dogs get so excited with just cat poo, I think they would explode with joy at the prospect of actual lion poo 🦁!
I quite fancy getting some, just for the glamour it would add to my otherwise quite dull graden.

The bastard. Could you shoot at it with a water pistol?

FussyFusspott · 21/09/2024 17:47

Train your dog not to eat shit.

Sorry but if you're unwilling to put anything down to deter cats what can people suggest? The cat and the cats owners aren't doing anything wrong, cats have the right to roam.

Ttcpph · 21/09/2024 17:48

@Dabralor I would love to! Generally, by the time I've spotted it, it's done its business and runs off. It sooo hard to catch it in the act. Only once has it been in the garden and I've managed to get the dog to chase it. Doesn't seem too bothered /scared tho 😠

OP posts:
Ttcpph · 21/09/2024 17:50

@FussyFusspott clearly you're a cat owner 🙄That's like telling a toddler not to eat sweets. It's just not feasible! To my dog,, the cat poo is the most delicious treat... why should cats have the right to roam?! I should have the right to let me dog out in our fully enclosed garden and not worry about cat shit!

OP posts:
SkiingIsHeaven · 21/09/2024 17:57

Chuck your dog shit in the cat owner's garden and if they complain tell them to clean up their cat shit from your garden or put something on their fences to stop their cat shitting in your garden. The cat is their responsibility not yours.

Ttcpph · 21/09/2024 18:04

@SkiingIsHeaven i wish I knew who the cat belonged to!!
going to try the high pitched noise sensors I think!

I've never known a cat to bury their poo, they shit everywhere round her and never bury it. They might in cat litter that's easy to turn, kick up and cover but that's pretty different from pooing on the grass and being able to cover it. A few kicks aren't going to have any effect there. Fox poo is black so easy to tell from cat poo which isn't. A lot of animals eat poo.

CeruleanBelt · 21/09/2024 18:20

I trained my dog to chase the cats - whenever i see one in the garden i give him the command "Chase the cat" and open the door, he flies out there like a Greyhound (he's not a Greyhound). He's never caught one and i don't think he would know what to do with it anyway. The cats don't know that.

It only took a couple times of the main culprit being chased until it decided to go somewhere it wasn't going to be chased mid shit. Much less shit in the garden now.
