she is nearly 15,
her breath is rancid.
wouldnt like to openher mouth myself to look but had a sideways peep and the side ones are greyish black, i spose it goes with age?

she has chewy minty things and biscuits to improve her teeth/breath but shoudl vet take a look?

yes

Remove them, if that's what's needed, i would think xx

Ecmo · 20/04/2008 21:52

they could clean them but they would have to give her a general anesthetic which they would be reluctant to do on a 15year old dog just for a teeth clean.

SlartyBartFast · 20/04/2008 21:53

remove them casper?
aww, gumsy, i spose she could manage being gumsy then?

wouldnt they have to do GA for removing the teeth?

They would need to give a GA yes. But a good vet would weigh up the pros & cons. If they're just black, but not causing any probs, then they'd leave them alone. However, rotting teeth (& the associated gum disease), can cause much worse problems than just bad breath - if left, they can contribute to heart & kidney problems, as well as being bloody painful to the dog & eventually making it v difficult for the dog to eat. It's amazing how much animals put up with (re: pain), and once rotten teeth are removed & the rest cleaned, sometimes the dog can seem like its got a new lease of life.
Just cos a dog is old, doesn't mean it can't cope with a GA. The vet should do a full health check, a blood sample if nec, and GAs are much safer nowadays. If needs be, they can put your dog on a drip during the GA (if the bloods show any probs). Ask the vet how the nurses monitor the GA.
Does your dog have any other health problems, or is she well for her age otherwise??

thanks casper.
no she is well, if slightly podgy,
there was some mention of a heart murmur 5+ years ago but only mentioned twice and not again.
have lapsed on her boosters since moving 3 years ago so only saw vet once in the last 3 years, for "footballers knee"... so, yes, think she is fine and healthy for an old girl.

Well, i'd just get her to the vets then. Good luck xx

SlartyBartFast · 24/04/2008 09:43

she had to have 20 teeth out
and there was me thinking they might just recommend a toothpaste

20 teeth!!! OMG, that must be a record!! She obviously needed it though, no vet would put her (or themselves) through that otherwise!
Hope she feels much better soon xxxx

i must admit the vet's face was a picture when he saw her teeth.
