Please be aware that sometimes children are frightened of your dog.

Please acknowledge that saying "oh he's dead soft, he wouldn't hurt a fly" will not stop that child from being frightened.

Please please please do NOT allow your very large and vicious looking dog to follow you to nursery when you pick your children up because some of the other nursery children WILL be frightened of the large, vicious looking dog hanging around the school playground, looking like it is hunting a small person.

Please do not patronise me by telling me that it is allright when my child screams and runs into the road to get away from your dog.

Just lock the fucking thing up occasionally will you?

(apologies to everyone who is not my selfish twatty neighbour)

thank you.

Rant over.

agal - if a dog regardless of its size lunged at my children and drooled all over them uninvited I would to begin with speak to the owners, then to the school, then to the dog warden.

hercules1 · 19/04/2008 13:56

However it was simply a case of a mutual interaction between the two but because the dog was large and the type to drool hence the dogs looks large next to the child and child gets drool on it then wouldnt be fussed.

kayzisexpecting · 19/04/2008 13:56

My mum has a huge dog not large but huge and he is not allowed of his lead unless we are in the middle of nowhere. I know my mum would never ever let him do what this dog owner lets her dog do.

I don't think letting a dog run around is socalising it really. Socialising it would be having it behave hile on a lead.

I think you should maybe talk to the local dog warden for some advice.

bethoo · 19/04/2008 13:57

i was told recently that it is in the Dangerous Dogs Act that a dog is classed as dangerous if you feel threatened by its behaviour and also dogs are not allowed off lead in public places anyway so you have every right to putin a complaint and i am sorry for any rottie owners out there but many of these recent attacks have been unpredicted where the dog was a family pet taht just suddenly turned and it can happen with any breed but surely the owner should be aware of other peoples feelings what with the recent media coverage on this breed. not out to offend anyone. i had a lady who crossed the road when i walked my boxer on the lead!

hercules1 · 19/04/2008 13:58

Socialising is mixing with all sorts of people and dogs (that includes little dogs socialising with large dogs), experiencing all sorts of experiences both on and off the lead. Dogs are far less likely to be aggressive if off the lead then on.

flowerybeanbag · 19/04/2008 14:01

I agree it is a shame some children are frightened of dogs. Some parents don't help though.

My dog is trained not to approach children or pushchairs or anything and usually just ignores them, walking straight past giving a good berth. Some children are desperate to stroke him (see profile, he is extremely appealing) and he is extremely tolerant of vigorous hands, but it does sadden me to see parents yanking their child away when the child isn't showing any fear and my dog is showing no interest anyway.

Goes without saying he is never off his lead anywhere near roads, schools, etc, only in the park. I wish more parents would be interested in helping their children get over their fear - my dog would be ideal to help with this as he is small and very gentle and tolerant. I am always willing to get him to sit nicely on his lead for stroking by a child for this purpose if asked, but it doesn't happen often.

Squonk your situation sounds horrendous, I agree with others that a bit of drastic action is needed, that's really not on.

kayzisexpecting · 19/04/2008 14:02

Oh flowery he is gorgeous!!

expatinscotland · 19/04/2008 14:03

'Or do you think that the dog shouldn't come on the school/nursery run at all?'

i don't think they should come at all.

flowerybeanbag · 19/04/2008 14:05

He is isn't he kayz?

hercules1 · 19/04/2008 14:05

He's a beauty

aGalChangedHerName · 19/04/2008 14:06

Hercules i have to pick dd2 up and carry her and shield dd1 to get down the path out of the school as there are usually 1-2 dogs tied up either side.

Haven't thought about the dog warden but will consider that.

The school say that they have sent letters out and can do nothing else

I like dogs btw. We had a family dog when i was growing up before someone says i am a dog hater!!

expatinscotland · 19/04/2008 14:06

'Oh come on - just because people are 'dog phobic' doesn't mean that every large dog owner shouldn't socialise their dog.'

Socialise their dog somewhere in private.

I fail to see why I should be subjected to them off leads at all whilst in public.

My rights as a person are greater than that of some dog.

Bring back the wardens! Fines for everyone in public with the creature off lead and bring back licensing as well.

hercules1 · 19/04/2008 14:09

It wouldnt be possible to socialise a dog in private! I agree dogs shouldnt be allowed to go up to people unless invited to do so but a dog running off a lead in a park where it is allowed to do so and not invading your space is fine imo.

kayzisexpecting · 19/04/2008 14:09

Hercules, I don't think dogs should be of the lead in public whether they are socalising or not until they are fully trained. Which the dog in question certianly isn't.

hercules1 · 19/04/2008 14:10

I agree with you that dogs shouldnt be off the lead unless they are trained to be recalled however socialisation doesnt end once a dog has been trained -it's lifelong.

hercules1 · 19/04/2008 14:11

The dog in question isnt being socialised. It's just bad dog ownership.

kayzisexpecting · 19/04/2008 14:12

I want to know what the owner would do/say if the dog was hit by a car. Its a very real possiblity.

hercules1 · 19/04/2008 14:13

I would be more interested in what the driver of the car had to say! They would be liable as the owners. So irresponsible.

DarrellRivers · 19/04/2008 14:16

We have a dog
DCs like the dog
They are scared of other dogs, it's innate,(and sensible IMO) particularly the big ones.
What does not help the situation are large dogs like labradors being walked without leads, and then knocking my toddler over
I have a dog, i know the labrador won't hurt him, etc etc etc
just keep your dog on the lead when around others
i do
and please say sorry if your dog does knock my son over
i don't take mine on the school run either
would like to, but 'tis not appropriate

expatinscotland · 19/04/2008 14:36

I think dogs should only be allowed off lead in designated parks, with other ones being on-lead only and wardens in place to fine those who don't obey.

I don't care if they need to socialise or not.

I'm sick of sharing parks and public space with their waste and their bother.

cosima · 19/04/2008 14:43

I too am frightened of dogs and I find it really annoying when dog owners let their dogs run up to you and jump up at you and feel it is enough to say 'its okay, he doesn't bite'. I don't want your dogs to jump up at me. Never has a dog owner apologized to me, for their dog bothering me. I am worried about pssing on my fear to my ds, but i am paranoid that a dog will get him when he moves from carrycot to pushchair. I personally think that dogs should be banned, but i'm aware that that is fascist, but why do they shit in the middle of the pavement? Cats don't, they do it discreetly in the corner of someone's garden!

expatinscotland · 19/04/2008 14:47

'I personally think that dogs should be banned, but i'm aware that that is fascist,'

That's not fascist. Since not all owners are willing or able to control them, then they should be on lead in public at ALL TIMES unless they are in a designated areas.

It's not a right to own them or keep them.

And pedestrians rights to use the pavement unhindered and use parks without their bother is greater than someone's right to have their creature off lead.

hercules1 · 19/04/2008 15:00

I wish there were dog only parks too in the uk, expat.

I find that that humans leave far more rubbish and mess etc in parks then dogs do.

hercules1 · 19/04/2008 15:01

Just thinking of broken glass, used condoms, syringes, food left etc by people in many of the parks round here.

expatinscotland · 19/04/2008 15:03

I'd rather meet one of those than a dog off lead, tbh.
