A companion for our rabbit?

Just been reading a post about how rabbits like
a companion , now I feel really guilty - our poor oul rabbit out there all by himself - I thought they were happier that way!

So would we be ok getting him/her a little pal - can the same sex be together? - I really don't want lots of babies

We had two rabbits. One died mysteriously after only a few months, so we got a new baby one to keep the older one company. The older one picks on the little one something rotten. Think carefully about introducing another one at a later stage - if you get them together that's a different matter.

Tis best to have NEUTERED (!!!!!!!!) pairs, they love a friend. Put rabbit pairing into google and click feeling lucky and theres loads of great info on rabbit rehome website

rabbits really need to be freom the same litter, or at the very least 2 very young ones bought at the same time (usually of opposite sexes) so that they don't fight.

if you introduce another rabbit now you may well find that the older one will attack it. they're very territorial

Yes as Foofi says you do have to introduce them slowly or they may not get on - again there is great info on that site

You should definetly try and introduce a companion. maybe keep them seperate but so they can see each other before letting them loose together? (i.e. mesh between them or something) do you have a run for them outside? I always think rabbits are better off as housepets.

BigBadMouse · 17/04/2008 22:30

Whatever you do, don't get a guinea pig as a companion for a bunny - not fair on either as they have very different habits.

Do you have any other pets the rabbit sees? We have had several rabbits that loved living alone but also loved the attention they got from the cats!

i need a female bunny for my male bunny. i am planning on getting him neutered, and a spayed female later on this year. they will be in seperate cages, side by side to start with, so they can see and smell each other, them will introduce them on neutral ground like a run. and see how they get on.

whatever you do, dont shove two bunnies into one old hutch together. there will be scraps.

rabbits love living in pairs.

I was wondering, I got 2 rabbits off a mnetter, one female, one male. She did have them together from babies and then when she realised they could have babies, she separated them. I had the female spayed 2 weeks ago, and would like to put them back together soon, but I am concerned that the male will just keep jumping her. How do I go about it?

thisisyesterday · 20/04/2008 21:54

if you don't want him to keep jumping her then you will have to get him neutered

Wouldn't a cat attack a rabbit?

We let our rabbit the freedom of the garden for a couple of hours each day but keep the cat inside when he's out - I'd be afraid that he'd kill him..

If you had a rabbit as a housepet what do you do about the poo? When our rabbit is inside he leaves a trail of droppings wherever he goes - I wouldn't fancy having to follow him around with the dustpan and brush all day!

bugger I went to have him netured but the vet said to get the female done. So I will have to get him done too...

LovesTents · 20/04/2008 23:27

yes our little guy has a teddy too, he likes to butt him around a bit and cuddle up to him.

I feel so sorry for him though by himself ,think I will get him neutered and then maybe introduce a companion, fingers crossed it will all go ok..

sparkly I am surprised your vet said to get the female done as it's a bigger op for a girl than for a boy.
usually costs more too- maybe that's why they suggested it :s

LOvestents, rabbits do tend to do their business in a specific place, so if you provide a litter tray then the rabbit should use it.
mine always always used the same corner of his run, so when he was inside we had a litter tray behind the sofa and I put in a few droppings so he'd know that was the poo place lol
