Anxious about leaving the dog while on holiday

We are going on a big family holiday in August, which includes all of our usual ‘dog sitters’. This was planned several months ago and so we also found/hired a dog walker who offered house & dog sitting. Great we thought - our dog gets used to the new person and also gets to stay at home. Last month the walker/sitter let us know they were giving that up for personal reasons and could no longer help. So that was disappointing for us and a waste of £!

A friend of a relative has been incredibly kind and offered to have our dog at their house - they also have a dog and are retired. We did a walk with them last week and all seems fine, with another walk planned this week and hopefully a couple of hours stay at their house one afternoon.

I’m just feeling so anxious about causing stress to our dog, and especially of the two dogs getting into a fight or something like that. Nothing to say that will happen based on past behaviour of both, but you never know. The people looking after our dog are very kind and responsible. I just can’t stop feeling sick and so tense (my chest is so tight!) about it and of something going wrong. I don’t want any problems between relatives and their friends if something happens. I’m thinking kennels as another option but it feels a bit late to be researching good ones now, as DH feels strongly against kennels. I don’t even know why I’m posting this lol as don’t have a question as such just needed to offload some worry/guilt at leaving the dog.

A long time ago, I was told that cats are about places and dogs about people, and it always comes back to me. I think cats are happier in their own home even if people are absent. So long as someone feeds them and ensures they have what they need, they're fine.

Dogs need their people or substitutes. So, I'm sure yours will be fine - you are providing people who will give them the attention they need. Much better than kennels.

We are away now and all is fine! The couple looking after our dog say she has settled in really well and in a couple of videos she looks very chilled with tail wagging! I’m glad she’s on familiar roads/paths for her walks. We did an afternoon stay with them pre holiday and I think that helped a lot too (probably me more than the dog!!)
