Does this mean anything or is she just being cheeky?

When I went upstairs earlier on to put DS2 to bed my cat had been in his bed and jumped out as I went in. She hasn't been allowed to sleep on my bed since the night I found out I was expecting DS1 and, even though she has the run of the house when we are in, she doesn't go upstairs much.

I am so worried about her as all she seems to do is sleep atm and is constantly asking for food when she is awake.

She is 14 in August.

i don't know sweetheart, could you ask your vet for basic check -up?((((((((((nab))))))))))

NotABanana · 13/04/2008 15:54

It seems a daft thing to ring the vet about though. It is so hard with her illness as I don't understand it and the vet can't give us a prognosis as it is quite rare, and I find myself worrying about every little thing with her. I have had her since she was 5 weeks old and she meant everything to me when I lived on my own. I would come home from work and she would be sat on the window sill waiting for dinner me.

Feel especially said after seeing that dead cat today.

i don't think the vet will mind you taking her for a check up, it does sound as though it is out of character for her so maybe a check up will put your mind at rest xx

She has been like it a while but the bed thing is fairly new and doesn't happen a lot. Cat is currently sat at the dinner table!

i would take her to the vets, they can run some bloods to rule things out and possibly prescribe something to pick her up, it could be something simple or it could just be her age - put your mind at rest.

Cats sleep a lot though, don't they and she is getting on.

I just know I am going to be heartbroken when she dies and it is almost like I am trying to prepare myself.

When she first got ill just under 3 years ago I didn't want her to have a scan, they thought she might have a brain tumour, and I just wanted her put to sleep. I felt she was going to suffer and why prolong it if the end result was the same? I wasn't thinking straight as my Nana had just died and I had just had a baby. Thank Goodness the insurers paid the £2500 for the scan and she didn't have a tumour.

Oh, she is such a darling cat.

cats do sleep alot yes its what they do best. I was thinking more along the lines of her eating +++ would be worth ruling out diabetes and thyroid problems, both easy to fix. I'm sure she will be fine.

NotABanana · 13/04/2008 19:35

She doesn't get fed more than two meals a day but she starts asking for tea at 2-3 o'clock and would eat everything we gave her if we just kept feeding her. BTW She has hyperestesias and arthritis a bit in her back end.

i dont know anything about hyperestesias, eating +++ can be indicative of a thyroid problem, some cats who are hyperthyroid can be very agitated and nervy but not neccesarily. Two of my mums cats had this, they would eat eat eat, got quite skinny, had a thyroid op and turned into little fatties - one was 15 btw. Might just be as well to get her checked over, just to put your mind at rest.

beautifulgirls · 13/04/2008 20:30

Hyperthyroidism would fit quite nicely with many of the symptoms you have described here. It can be diagnosed with a blood test and there are a few treatment options including tablets or surgery. It is one of the nicer diagnoses to make in an older cat as they usually do really well on treatment. Well worth a trip to the vet.

NotABanana · 13/04/2008 21:00

She wants extra food but doesn't get it. She was spayed quite young and put weight on. She is around 12lbs at the moment. I will watch her this next week as I think she is due her 6 onths regular check up soon anyway. Thanks.

Oh heck, beautifulgirls.

I had better ring the vet tmw.

Is it connected to her other problem? She is on daily tablets for that and will be for life.

OP posts:
beautifulgirls · 13/04/2008 23:04

No probably not connected to those and it shouldn't be a problem to treat her any differently to any other cat with a thyroid problem I don't think. Don't be too alarmed it is treatable and well for most of them - besides the vet hasn't confirmed it yet

NotABanana · 14/04/2008 09:04

She has always liked her food, I wonder if I am just worrying over nothing.
