Anyone around who is knowledgeable about blood in canine vomit?

I have just got back from a walk with my dog, during which he vomited large amounts of bright red blood. He continued his walk as normal aftewards but has not been himself for a few days and has been vomiting (no blood) for a few days.

There is a good chance it is an ulcer due to long term anti-inflammatory use.

My question is, do I need to get him vetinary attention today or will it wait til tomorrow?

Is he still eating and drinking?
it is tricky if there is no longer blood in the vomit. most likely blood in vomit is something to do with the stomach so he may have eaten something or like you said he could have an ulcer.
wa the blood today? i would see if he is still puking blood later and if so get him to vets jsut to b3q on3 the safe side.

Thanks Bethoo. Yes, it was today - he hasn't vomited since.

He snarfed a couple of scraps on the pavement that he saw before I did so I guess he would choose to eat but hasn't since getting home.

If he vomits later and there is blood in it would you say he needs a vet today or can I wait until tomorrow (I was going to take him tomorrow for his accupuncture anyway - I just wouldn;t want to wait around if I need to take him now)

I have some Antepsin. Do you know if I should give him it?

TBH, i would get him seen today. As the blood was bright red, that means it's fresh & chances are he's bleeding into his stomach from somewhere. I wouldn't give antepsin without seeing the vet 1st - it's only the correct treatment depending on where he's bleeding from originally. Are his gums still pink, and how is he in himself???

Casper - His gums are pink but a bit pale and he is very quiet. I have just phoned the emergency number and they said to bring him in tomorrow unless he vomits blood again.

Thanks for the advice - will definitely not give him the antepsin - or any of his usual medications for that matter tonight.

Poor dog . It never rains but it pours for him.

Good one for ringing them. TBH, i think he should be seen (spoke to DH who is a vet, & he said if he was on call for something like this, he'd see it), but i guess it's their call. Just remember you know your dog best, and if you're still worried later, i would insist on him being seen. That's what on call vets are there for! Good luck xxx

Thanks Casper (and DH)

He is fast asleep in his bed now and there's not much chance of him shifting for the rest of the day by the look of him. I'll keep going up and lifting his chops up to look at his gums I think and will most certainly ring back if he deteriorates in any way.

Thanks again.
