No Potty Lottie!!!

So I’ve just acquired a two year old toy poodle, Lottie, from a lady who reassured me she was toilet trained and was fine being left alone. Turns out Lottie likes to toilet on her walks (which is great!), but rather than use our back yard she is quite happy to pee on our carpet if she doesn’t have her walk. The other day she held it in for eight hours 😳

Lottie also has separation anxiety. I took her to school but now she’s not permitted anywhere near so I’m having to leave her whilst I do the school run. I was doing short leaving intervals, ignore her before going out/coming in etc, but because I’ve had to do cold turkey on her I feel like my efforts have all been in vain!

Any advice please?? Thanks

No Potty Lottie!!!

What on earth did she do to get banned from the school gates?!

Jenu294 · 12/07/2024 19:54

Not a lot! But some kids have serious allergies apparently so I can’t really take her on the playground (I even had her in a doggy carrier). I’m not willing to tie her up at the railings because it’s a distance from the school’s entrance plus she’d get way too distressed with kids petting her and my not being in her sight 🤷🏽‍♀️

Is your yard completely paved or are there grassy/earth areas? Some dogs don't like to pee on hard surfaces so a grassy patch might help.

Jenu294 · 12/07/2024 21:18

@SpanielintheWorks on a walk, she’s not that fussy - grass or concrete dependent on what mood she’s in.

I kid you not I’ve just taken her on a walk around the back of our house - practically outside our yard and she pee’d!!!!!!!

😩

Just walk her, problem solved!

Floralnomad · 12/07/2024 21:24

Teach her a cue word for toileting and then use it in the garden . It surprises me not that she has ‘issues’ as that’s probably why her last owners were getting rid ,but people lie .

@GinForBreakfast yea I’m just thinking long term, ie if I need to stay in the house with my daughter or it’s sleeting down with rain in the middle of winter - ideally I’d like her to run out quickly, do her thing, and back in again 😄

im not always going to be able to walk her when she feels like doing her business hence why she’s taken up to doing it upstairs on our carpet.

That picture of little Lottie says it all: She's innocent and YOU are telling porkies!

Dogs need walking every day, some dogs need walking twice a day, regardless of the weather and it's unfair to take a dog on if you aren't going to commit to meet all their requirements and that includes daily walks.

She needs to go out 1st thing, again early evening and then a before bed walk down the road. At least 1 hour in total.

She probably didn't have separation anxiety in her last home but she has been taken away from all that she knows. It will pass.

She is poodle so bright. Try training her to use door bells to go out

She needs to be walked. At least twice a day. Even in bad weather. That is the bare minimum of dog ownership. If you can't do that then don't keep her.

Jenu294 · 12/07/2024 23:02

@GinForBreakfast @Peanut91 Lottie gets two walks a day regardless of the weather! All I’m saying is, I need her to be able to use the yard, alert me. I can’t very well up and walk her if I’m home alone with my daughter (in the bath for example) and then Lottie decides to pee outside the bathroom there and then (which is where she is currently eliminating).

I retire to bed around 11pm. It would be handy therefore, if Lottie was able to relieve herself quickly in the yard. I’m not keen on the fact that she last went at 7pm, walking, then she’ll be holding it in for a further eleven hours if she refuses to use the yard. I don’t fancy much walking alone, in winter, late at night either tbh.

And besides as one person told me; eliminating on walks is fine but they still need to be house-trained!

I was merely posting to see if anyone had (or is) going through something similar? I didn’t title the post, “Help needed; dog to pee in the yard, can’t be bothered to walk her!” Now did I?

Yes using a cue word on walks and in the yard should help

Wolfiefan · 13/07/2024 10:43

If you know you’re going to bath your daughter then take the dog out the front for a pee first. Use a cue word when she goes. In time you’re likely to be able to transfer that to the back garden.
If she has separation anxiety it’s vital she’s not left for any longer than she’s happy with (even if that means not leaving her for now.) The FB group dog training advice and support have great info on this. Took my elder dog from eating a wall when I left her alone so I could have a pee to sighing if I dared to wake her after a trip to the cinema!

Jenu294 · 13/07/2024 13:26

@Wolfiefan yes I’m using a cue word, “pee-pee” 😄 when she eliminates on her walks and I also give her lots of praise and a treat. I’ve used the cue word countless times in the back yard and have a treat at the ready but she just looks at me then hankers to go back inside. I stand with her for a good 15-20 minutes, most times, and she’s just not showing any toileting cues whatsoever. But like last night for instance, I walked her round to the outside of our yard and she eliminated. I’m beginning to wonder now whether something may have spooked her in the yard that I’m not aware of?

I shall check out the FB dog training re-sep anxiety thanks.

If you have only had her for a few days/weeks then you will probably need to give her a lot more time to settle in. I'm sure she'll get there in time.
