We are looking into getting a dog later on this year. I think acocker spaniel would fit the bill but would like to hear from cocker owners - how much walking do they need, are they daft as a brush, do they tend to be good with children (7yrs and 5yrs)..and is there any chance that they will get on ok with cats?

Thank you.

my dad used to breed cockers when i was little,so we always had lots of them around when i was growing up,we used to show them too.
we had a black cocker a few years ago and she was the lovelyiest little thing, she was called lady, and was just that,we couldnt leave her alone, she used to go everywherewith us,she would sit in the car no problems while we were at work, but leave her in the house and she would wreck it!she could be snappy though, and i wouldnt have had her with the kids around.
my dad said that the solid coloured ones (black/golden) are not the best natured, but he never had any problems in 20y of breeding in any other colours.

ingles2 - does this agressive thing in golden (or maybe reddy coloured dogs) apply to the yellow labs?
The yellow ones aren't golden, unlike retrievers, so maybe they don't have the same traits?

My yellow lab is definitely not like that but we got her from a good breeder who had small children so she was used to being picked up by kids from early on. Also we saw the mother who was so placid to the point of comatose, so that probably helped too.

no labs etc are different,
a long time ago breeders were getting more money for solid coloured cockers,so people started breeding them, because of the demand, but they werent caring if the dogs they were breeding were related, hence the bad temperament as they were interbred.

We have a blue roan cocker almost three years old. I would not choose any other breed as he is fantastic with the kids, very loving and loves companionship.

I have heard that certain golden cocker spaniels can be a bit aggressive.

I would also recommend a look at cockersonline. It's been like a bible for me over the past two and a half years.

Floaty, if you go to the Jarbaha website, Dill is the chocolate brown pup in both of the pics of the rows of pups on the main, front page.

How cute is he..... [awww, broody for when dill was a pup emoticon]

Sorry, one of hte pics is not a row of pups, it is pups playing and dill is nearest a ball.
