Poo eating labrador help!!

My Choc lab is 10 months and absoutely gorgoues (sp?) apart from he eats other dogs poo. He has lots of exercise and obviously because of his size he needs to be off lead for a lot of the time. It is actually getting me down now as sometimes when he eats it he is sick and as you can imagine absoutely disgusting which I have to clear up. I need to know if anyone has sorted out this problem (which I know has a medical/behavioural name but can't remember it!) and if you have how did you do it. I would really enjoy him so much if only he didn't have this disgusting habit.
ThanksXX

This is common and is a problem he will probably grow out of. However, it's obviously not a good idea to let your dog scavenge in general when running off lead, because it will put him at increased risk of gastroenteritis among other things.

You might want to think about teaching him a 'leave' command so you can prevent him from eating stuff you don't want him to. Being a Labrador he's probably a walking dustbin so you'll find it handy! Start off by offering an exchange for a favourite toy when you're at home. Giving him a small treat while he's carrying a toy, and saying 'leave it' when he drops it to get the treat will teach him that it's worth his while to do as you ask. If you reinforce this over time you'll eventually be able to ask him to leave things out on walks, but don't expect too much too soon because it's always much more difficult out of the house.

You might find clicker training effective because it teaches the dog to focus on you, the owner. It's much easier to prevent unwanted behaviour if your dog's attention is on you to start with! This book might help.

Hi, I have a ten month old choccie lab too. He doesn't eat dog poo, just deer & horse poo (which is apparently ok for them - boak!). However any time I have a query with him I search on the Labrador Forums website which I have found a source of fantastic information.
Hope that helps!

I have 5 year old lab and her 5 month old puppy and they live in the horses stable all day when I am work, and they eat my horse poo!
never does them any harm, but if they pick up anything I dont want them to when we are out walking, they know to drop it when I tell them to "leave it"
