my children are pestering me for a pet. ds1 is desperate for a dog but I said maybe a guinea pig.

He wants one in the house. Do do you have one in the house, does it smell?

What are they like as pets, how many do you have?

Giggly pigs are great pets, we used to have 2 males, sadly no longer with us. In the summer they were in a hutch in the garden which I used to cover with a see through shower curtain at night and to keep the rain out, on nice days they were in a run on the grass. In winter they spent the day in the hutch and at night I used to put them in a hutch in the garage. A friend of mine has 2 indoor gp's, they live in a big cage and she cleans them out every other day. I think they need to be in pairs as they're sociable little souls.

Hi

We have three guinea pigs in an indoor hutch in the kitchen. We usually clean them out every other day but on occasions it has been every three days. They don't smell at all.

I would recommend guinea pigs to anyone - they are adorable. If you keep them indoors keep them where you will see them a lot. They are wonderful little critters and the children love watching their little ways.

We also have an indoor run for them which they love.

Our two live in a hutch in the garden, with a rabbit who looks after them rather sweetly. We do sometimes keep them in a hutch inside in very cold weather but then they do smell, and our house doesn't have a brilliant place to keep them inside.

They are very easy pets apart from the issue of whether to let them live inside when it's cold.

ours lived in the kitchen and didn't smell at all. they need to be kept in pairs though.

We have 4.
Marmite is a neutered male who lives with his female companion Poppy in a hutch in the garden. They get come inside in the winter.
Honey & Sparkles live in separate hutches in the conservatory but go outside in their run together in the garden daily.
They don't smell. I clean them at least once a week, clearing out the wet spots more frequently.

Hay and veg are essential in their diets and should be given a fresh supply every day as well as dry GP food. Some veggies are bad for pigs and some you can only give occasionally so its best to check it out first.
There are many great GP websites and forums out there.

Where abouts are you? There are lots of guineas looking for homes in rescue centres.

well i have three children so was thinking one each, in for a penny in for a pound. not sure if i will wait until the weather gets a bit warmer so we can keep them outside.

the only downside of having them outside is that the children wont see them so much, so might keep them in to start with and see how it goes, or how smelly they are. But most of you said they are not smelly.

I think one reason they aren't smelly indoors is because they are in the warm and accessible. It only takes a couple of minutes to clean out an indoor cage whereas trekking to the bottom of the garden in the cold and wet is much more of a chore and people tend to do it less often IME.
They make adorable pets, real little characters and unlike rabbits I've never met a nasty-tempered one.

It could be our rabbit which is smelly, rather than the guinea pigs. Though I do think they smelll a bit too, not totally unpleasant, but it makes your house a bit stable-like. Plastic indoor hutches are less smelly and easier to clean than the wooden outdoor ones.

Burstingbug, can you recommend any guinea sites or forums?

I have two indoor girls, and they don't smell (much).
