Labradoodles - are they good pets to have with kids?

DH has sort of agreed that when I give up my job next year the DCs can have a dog - now he is very particular that it mustn't be a gay dog (that means he will not walk a yorkie type dog!) - I like beagles but they are supposed to be a bit too willful, now he is talking about a labradoodle - does anyone have one?

Do they smell and shed hair - someone told me they don't but I am not sure I believe them!

i'm sorry but pmsl at gay dog. my parents have a yorkie, who is gay! they tried to breed him with a female yorkie, but he wasnt interested, but tried to hump a male dog instead.

labradoodles, can shed hair. they are not the allergy friendly dog most people assume they are. some dogs have the full curls, and others look very lab like with just a small amount of curl. some shed mroe than others.

i find all dogs smell.

my parents dog is gay as in a male and only likes humping make dogs.

misdee · 02/04/2008 18:34

labradoodle uk site i researched them laods as was looking at getting a dog which is suitable for our family.

I want a curly one!

A gay one would be fine for me so long as it doesn't try to hump me!

TWINKLE1.
I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS 100% TRUE BUT I WAS SPEAKING TO A LADY FROM PRO-DOGS RESCUE THE OTHER DAY AND SHE TOLD ME THAT THE LABRADOODLES WERE 1ST BRED AS GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND BECAUSE SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO NEEDED GUIDE DOGS WERE ALSO ALLERGIC TO THE HAIRS FROM THE RETRIEVER/LABRADOR SO THEY BRED THE LABRADOODLE BECAUSE THEY ARE NON-MOULT.
UNFORTUNATLY I CANNOT COMMENT ON TEMPRAMENT.

readytoswiggin · 04/04/2008 01:58

my friend has a pup who is about 6mths now, lovely dog and no probs with her dcs, touch wood.

can't comment on the breed as a whole though.

If you get a doodle, get pet insurance. You will need it and you will use it and you will thank the lord you did. They are notorious for eating crap they shouldn't (just like a lab) and your vet will become your new best friend.
Nice dogs though - if you want similar looking and less insane look at giant schnauzers - similar size, not sure on personality but I know the minis make fab family pets.

A "labradoodle" is another designer breed, basically a lab/poodle mix with a strange name.

You'd be better off going to a rescue and giving a home to a needy mongrel rather than paying big money to a "breeder" for one.

My sister has one and has found him to be quite hard work. He is quite big and needs a lot of exercise. Also he tries to be very dominant which they have to keep on top of.
I don't think they moult as much as some dogs but they do to a certain extent.

ChopsTheDuck · 10/04/2008 14:19

labradoodles aren't yet a recognised breed. It is true about the guide dog history. YOu don't really know what characteristics you are going to get. Soime do moult, and I've known some poodles that have terrible temperment. On the other hand labs eat everything in sight and can be very wilful! They are often very strong ont he lead and pull like mad, and destructive as puppies so need a lot of training.
Some dogs smell, some don't, its actually quite personal to the dog! Obv any dog with a shorter coat is less likely to smell.

Look at petplanet website and champdogs. Loads of info and quesionnaire thing to help decide on breed.

Iota · 10/04/2008 15:24

all dogs smell to a greater or lesser extent.

the owners just get used to it

hercules1 · 10/04/2008 15:27

Apparently our house stinks and so does our car but we dont smell it at all.

Iota · 10/04/2008 15:33

I once had to spend a day out in a car with a collegue who regularly used to take his dog out with him when travelling. The doggy smell in the car was really bad (hot day), but the driver was oblivious. - that's a barf face, not envy BTW

talkingmongoose · 17/04/2008 00:13

Ask on the champdogs forum, they've got plenty of advice on labradoodles.

SubRosa · 17/04/2008 19:15

SIL has a labradoodle and it reeks, the smell is a cross between old trainers and cheese.

If you want a relatively non-smelly dog, get a Patterdale. They're lovely, but they need LOADS of exercise.
