claricebeansmum · 01/04/2008 17:20

NomDePlume · 01/04/2008 17:20

is it a bird ?

a dog ?

coppertop · 01/04/2008 17:20

I think it's a cross between a cocker spaniel and a poodle. Horrible name though.

Piffle · 01/04/2008 17:22

far better name than a shit poo shit zu poodle cross

JamInMyWellies · 01/04/2008 17:22

Is it a cross between cocker spaniel and poodle??

Have no knowledge myself but would imagine they are pretty intelligent if its the mix of dogs I think which would also make them quite wilful. I have a cocker/basset and he is fab but quite hard work.

Am sure someone will come along shortly with good advice.

claricebeansmum · 01/04/2008 17:22

LOL at shitpoo

NomDePlume · 01/04/2008 17:23

I think it should be a Cocker Spoodle

TillyScoutsmum · 01/04/2008 17:24

My next door neighbour has one - tis very cute ... I don't know them very well but they have 3 dc's (about 3, 5 and 7 ish)

BettySpaghetti · 01/04/2008 17:26

I thought this was an April Fools Day thread

It reminds me of that joke:

I went to a zoo yesterday. It only had one animal...a dog....it was a shitzu (shit zoo)

talkingmongoose · 01/04/2008 17:32

Just be aware that it's a crossbreed, you can find similar for free in any rescue centre, don't be fooled into paying big money.

Alambil · 01/04/2008 18:27

Make sure their tails aren't docked either; that's illegal now

maddiemostmerry · 01/04/2008 19:02

Thanks, no tail not docked.
Yes, should have said cross between poodle and spaniel.
Have looked at our local rescue centre and not really found any dogs that are suitable for our family. Akitas, bullterriers etc which they won't rehome with children under teenage or cats.
I'm hoping it is a fairly intelligent dog will be prepared for the wilful side

Please do not support a backyard breeder. No decent breeder will be breeding mongrels and selling them as some fantastic new breed! They are generally only puppy farms.

I am sure there are various dogs in shelters that aren't Akitas or bull breeds (Am not sure why the rescue you contacted won't re-home a bull breed to you, they are renowned for being excellent with children)

Would you mind saying what you're general area is? I could look for some rescues around you maybe? Have you also tried the pound? There won't be as much background info with a pound dog as there will be with a rescue dog as they haven't been properly assessed but you can get a good idea of a dogs personality yourself anyway if you meet them.

wheresthehamster · 01/04/2008 21:54

These crosses are REALLY expensive. Labradoodles , cockerpoos, others I can't think of the names of. They are supposed to be good for not moulting. They look too weird for me.

maddiemostmerry · 02/04/2008 09:33

I don't think the people I'm buying from are hailing it as some new fantastic breed. It is a cross breed and I am happy with that. I know we are lucky that finance is not an issue in what we choose.
I have chosen this type of dog as I am a multiple allergy sufferer although we have always had pets and I use medication to control. I know that there will always be some sheding and amm prepared to deal with it. We had been looking for a minature poodle but have found a pup that is right for our family

I have looked at provison for homeless dogs in my area thoroughly and the reason they will not allow us a dog is usually based on their assessment of a dogs behaviour due to the treatement it has previously received. Don't get me wrong this was the first avenue we looked down but it was not right for us. We have four rescue cats and it is not about not wanting a rescue animal, my decision is based on the needs of my family.

oh they are just gorgeous! Don't know anything about poodles but my cocker is a fantastic family pet.

CountryGirl2007 · 06/04/2008 01:00

If you want a non shed dog, then at least go a decent breeder. Poodles, bicon frise etc are non-shed. I don't think westies shed either, mine doesn't anyway, she has sort of fluffy hair that only comes out when she is brushed.

There is no such thing as a decent designer dog breeder.

RahRahRachel · 06/04/2008 01:35

Designer dog? It's just a cross breed. How do you know it isn't from a decent breeder?

kiskideesameanoldmother · 06/04/2008 02:13

cockapoos have been bred in the States from at least the late 80's. it is not just a cross bred mongrel. I am surpised that it has taken this long for them to be noticed over here - in any great numbers. I should think that they are great with kids.

they also do yorkiepoos. has anyone noticed them? I love dogs but cannot accomodate one in my life at the mo.

CountryGirl2007 · 06/04/2008 02:14

Because, good breeders usually only breed perfect specimens of the breed, i.e. perfect conformation and temperament, health tested etc. usually dogs are doing well in shows or their sport, or have excellent show bloodlines.

Unfortunately, the majority of breeders seem to be "backyard" breeders.

Someone who creates mongrels, is not a good breeder. It takes years, decades even to create a new breed. A first-generation mongrel is just that, a mongrel.

If somebody has a few hundred £'s to give to a so-called breeder for a mongrel, I suggest giving it to a rescue instead as they are the ones who have to clean up the mess after these backyard breeders i.e. the thousands of extra dogs being added to the population every year.

and a "designer" dog, is a mongrel that has been given a fancy name by a breeder hoping to make obscene amounts of money from this new "trend" pretty much the same as the "teacup" thing. teacup Chihuahua's, yorkies etc!

Hope it's not too late to add my tuppenceworth into this.

I have a cockapoo, now 2 years old, and hope to get a second one in the Summer so am maybe a bit biased in favour of this 'breed'.

As has been mentioned they are not a pedigree, they are a cross between usually a Cocker spaniel Mum and a Poodle Dad, and have been around since the 1950's when they were first bred in the States.

As with any puppy, potential owners need to be very careful of where they are buying their pup from so that unscrupulous breeders are not used.

The Cockapoo Owners Club website has a lot of information on it on what to look for and what questions to ask a breeder when looking for a pup and I would recommend using their guidelines and adding to it as needed.

From my experience, having had dogs most of my life, they are a cracking 'breed', easy to train, happy, great personality and a joy to own, but whatever dog anyone decides to get, pedigree, cross or good old mongrel, do the checks before making your decision and make sure you can commit to the dog for life.

Maybe about 4 years late Deedy Grin
