I have 2 Abysynthian(sp?) guineas and one of them often has a wet bottom which i notice when i pick her up.
They are well fed, cleaned out every other day and appear to be very healthy with bright eyes etc.

Go on, take her!

I think they can get wet tail, which is an infection. It can be very nasty so you need to take it to the vet. It can be caused by a big shock (when they travel in a car for a long time etc). Hampsters can get this aswell. He really does need to see a vet.

ok will do then thanks.

Try not to worry. It might not be as bad as you think it is.

emiliadaniel · 01/04/2008 17:13

Guinea pigs don't actually get wet tail in quite the same sense as hamsters but the name only really means diarrhoea anyway. If the guinea pig is otherwise quite well it could be a case of cystitis, which would need to be dealt with by a vet.

Beauregard · 01/04/2008 20:28

Well the vet is treating her for what he suspects is cystitis.Poor little piggie had to have an antibiotic injection and she let out a shriek when he did itgod i feel guilty.
I have to give her oral antibiotics for a week then take her back.

I've only just seen this - way way down the list I had a thread on a similar subject. With mine, it seems to flow up her tummy (charming). The vet wondered about stones (something quite frequent with guinea pigs) but couldn't feel anything, and didn't want to do anything invasive yet.

He did advise not to give her fruit as the acid can aggravate, so we have kept her and her sister on the greens (which they seem to prefer anyway). We had been giving them apple a lot. I suppose your vet has already said this anyway, given it is cystitis? I can't say she's improved much, but seems really healthy and unbothered. The dcs reckon she's just a mucky pup!

nickytwotimes · 02/04/2008 14:38

Glad guinea is being treated so well. Hope she is better soon, and yours too coffee!

beautifulgirls · 02/04/2008 15:41

If it doesnt settle get the vet to x-ray her to check for a bladder stone - very common in guinea pigs.

Beauregard · 02/04/2008 20:46

The vet did feel her for stones but i guess you cant always feel them.

coffeecrazedmama-We only occasionally feed them banana never apple or orange or tomatoes.

We gave her a dose of antibiotics tonight and she slurped it from the syringe bless her

Thanks for the replies.
