Does anyone know any good gsd breeders in Cornwall?

You have probably seen my other thread. I am getting a gsd next year. I wanted to get one from where we got our last gsd, but as this was 14 years ago I think they have either moved on or stopped breeding. Idealy I want to see the parents when there are no puppies around. Which is why I have started looking now. Can anyone help?

Would you consider a rescue GSD?

and

animalrescuers.co.uk/html/gsd. html

A relative of mine adopted a GSD from the pound and she turned out to be a wonderful dog. Unfortunately she had to be put to sleep last year due to Hip Dysplasia.

Hiya,
Thanks for the reply. Thats really sad, that's what happened to our last gsd . Would consider a rescue dog, we had a rescue rottweiler and he was the best dog, but most rescue places won't rehome to people with kids under 10.

You could asking on www.champdogs.co.uk they are a mountain of knowledge on good breed lines and other general info.

You are very lucky!

Thanks natalie I will ask there then. Do you like gsd's then? I will have my garden ready over the next few months, it's going to be so hard waiting for next year, but I am not able to commit 100% to a puppy before then.

You are doing the best thing you can in making sure you and the house/garden are absolutely ready for a new puppy.

TBH I see so many post's on here of people saying about how they got a puppy from 'the woman down the road', which really bugs me, it is nice to see someone who is going about it all properly!

And yes I love GSD's, we had 4 at one point when I was growing up, absolutely beautiful dogs

Hiya,
Can I ask you another question if you don't mind please. I have been emailing a breeder, asking lots of questions and was all set up to go and see their dogs nearer the end of this year. They had a beautiful dog on their website that they mated with one of there girls, and the pups are due next month. They have said that this would probably be the pair that they'd be breeding again next year. Anyway I keep having a look at the website, and the male dog is now up for sale? Am I right to be worried that they are selling him on, when they told me they were keeping him? I don't think they have had him all that long either? Sorry thats a bit of a waffle, hope you can understand what I mean.

hmm sounds a bit dodgy. especially the fact that they are breeding the bitch every year! any dencent dog breeder will make sure there are homes waiting for the puppies before the bitch is mated. Have they been hip scored etc?

As for the rescues, there are SO many gsd's looking for homes I'm sure you could find one. Maybe if you have a chat to the rescue and explain that you're children are used to dogs, know how to handle them etc.

I think rescues are just wary of rehoming to homes with children because some children are little sods and like to poke and annoy the dogs when the rescues want the dogs to go to nice homes where they can feel safe etc.

auntypurple · 01/04/2008 22:48

Thanks for the reply, they are kc registered, think there was a hip score mentioned, thats something I would ask when seeing the dogs.
I was always led to belive that a good breeder would have no more than 3 litters from the same bitch every year.
Maybe I am looking at it wrong, and should be looking for someone that breeds when they have homes for the pups.
These breeders did seam lovely, but tbh it's put me off seeing the dog up for sale.
There is a gsd rescue near me, so maybe I will have a chat with them and see what they say.
My dc's are no angels, but they know that they are not allowed to get on the dogs nerves, so maybe worth a shot.

tbh any old breeder can register with the KC afaik, so I wouldn't take much notice of that.

good luck with the rescue, it'd be brilliant if you could give a homeless dog a home. they are lovely dogs, so intelligent and loyal, not to mention stunning looking.

Agree with everything country girl has said

A 'good' breeder would never breed a bitch up to 3 times a year, more like once every 3 years. And because they breed to the breed standard, they wouldn't breed with their (or their neighbours dog) it takes sometimes years to properly examine blood lines and look at traits that they want to come out again, and the dog they use for stud could be 500+ miles away.

It really is so much more complicated than just putting a girl dog and a boy dog in the back yard together and hope they get on!

Go and have a good look through that website I linked to, ask some questions, there are a couple of GSD breeders on there, they will be able to tell you much more than me, and answer all your questions, and if they know of any decent breeders who are planning a litter they will be able to put you in touch with them.

You should also expect to pay somewhere between £600 up to £800 maybe £900 for a well reared puppy.

They will also be able be able to put you in touch with every GSD rescue in the country.

Good luck, still a bit
