Wasn't sure whether or not to post this, but as the weather starts to improve, I thought some of you might be interested in this recipe. Especially when you consider the price of the shop bought alternatives!

Not sure why you would need the honey for a dog, I’d leave that out.

per owners also need to check that the peanut butter does not contain Xylitol which is toxic to dogs. There is the possibility that it might show as sweetener on the ingredients list and not by name itself.

Dogs don't need ice cream! Unless you have a dog with a specific allergy just give them a tiny bit of human ice cream (eg last of the tub or take the bottom of your cone off and scoop a tiny amount onto it) if you want to treat them - a tiny amount won't do them any harm and is better than a full portion of dog ice cream. I did once by commercial dog ice cream for ddog and he wasn't impressed! He definitely knew the difference

I don't think it is dogs that need dog-friendly ice cream. I think it is the pubs, cafes, etc that want to draw in dog owners and make a little money from their space-taking mutts. Some of those ingredients are safe for dogs, but none of them are actually positive for them.
On very hot days, I chuck an ice cube for my dog to muck around with, or put one in his water bowl.

We were in a caff yesterday that had a full dog menu - stupidly pricey for what was basically dog chews/biscuits. EmmaNess is spot on - it's not for the dogs, it's for daft owners and for businesses to up their profits.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 01/04/2024 08:14

We give ice cream to our dog when he is coming round from an epileptic seizure. It can help him.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/04/2024 08:15

Well nobody needs icecream but we enjoy it ... and actually that sort of recipe works fine for everyone, I make instant 'icecream' in summer by blending frozen sliced bananas with some Greek yogurt and then whatever takes my fancy - almond butter, sometimes berries, maybe cinnamon, sometimes cocoa though not if it was to be shared with a dog of course.

My old boy adored icecream - he once got very lucky in the park when a kid dropped a cornetto with only the topping eaten. The dog got the whole thing into his mouth blunt end first - turned out it fit perfectly into a long standard dachshund snout - from where he somehow happily ingested it with no mess (or ill effects) Grin

magicstar1 · 01/04/2024 08:20

If we’re on a day out and buy a couple of soft serve cones, our dog gets one too. She absolutely loves it and has no ill effects.
She wouldn’t eat that dog ice cream as she hates banana, but I think I’ll make it for myself lol.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 01/04/2024 08:26

Lol at the ice-cream-cone shaped snout, @ErrolTheDragon. I knew that the ultra-distinguished-looking muzzles of dachshunds must have been evolved for some specific purpose Grin.
True about nobody needing ice cream, but most dogs are soooo 10000% excited about eating even the grossest most basic garbage that I can't imagine them getting significant additional pleasure from handcrafted (or expensive) ice cream.

I, on the other hand, am salivating at your ice cream recipes.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 01/04/2024 08:29

Re dogs getting excited about garbage, I used to have a bulimic Italian Spinone for whom the best and most convenient ice cream recipe was .... cowpats.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/04/2024 08:31

Mine grew out of his teenage fondness for roadkill and sheepshit but always loved an icecream, and did enjoy the dog ones on the couple of occasions he had one.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 01/04/2024 08:38

GrinI did relent recently in a pub, and bought my dog some liver and bacon from the dog menu. They were billed as 'treats' but in fact they were freshly cooked slices of liver and bacon, in a portion size that was full-on dinner for his terrier body. He always tries to drag me into that pub now.
I don't suppose bacon is very good for dogs so I guess I was not practising what I preach

LiterallyOnFire · 01/04/2024 08:39

Mine eat mini mcflurries 🤷🏼‍♀️

123dogdog · 02/04/2024 19:25

I went to a dog themed cafe at the local beach a year or so ago. We got the dog ice cream from the menu for the dog. And omg the farts later on, the smell, so so so much worse than his normal farts. Never again 😂 he enjoyed it though 😂

fieldsofbutterflies · 03/04/2024 07:59

Mine won't touch doggy ice cream - only the best human grade vanilla here 🙄😂
