We're on the waiting list with a breeder for a cocker spaniel puppy. Will most likely be a male and will probably be black and white based on the parents colouring.

I'd like to call it Horace or Humphrey...but not sure

What are your dogs called and what kind of dog are they - does it suit their personality?

They are lovely names, especially Horace.
I f I were to have a dog I'd call it Oscar.

Iklboo · 28/03/2008 13:44

Ours is called Candy - but the rescue centre had already named her that when we picked her up and she was used to it.
It does suit her becuase she is very sweet [vom emoticon]

Horace & Humphrey are nice names. I'd call it Joe or Jarvis meself

hoarsewhisperer · 28/03/2008 13:57

I like Oscar, but we have a cat called Oscar already and to me oscar is a black and white cat.

I like Angus.....

I sense ds will get the final say in the name, but we thought we'd give him a shortlist of names because he's only 5 and will probably pick something odd!

We have a red setter that was going to be called Poppy or Ruby, very predictable red names but our DS didn't like either of them, so we couldn't agree which to choose.
Went to choose our dog from the breeder and they had already named one of the females Edith after Edith Bowman who had won Fame Academy the day before our dog was born, to keep track of the 12 puppies in the litter, they had named them and put different coloured cat collars on them!
So we chose Edith as that is my Mum's name and we agreed on calling her Edie, it really suits her and is easy to call in the park. She's a gorgeous, elegant and lovely dog and it was meant to be that she got that name.

Horace and Humphrey are good names, though not very strong sounding when you want them to carry across a windy park. That's why working sheepdogs have short, hard names, so the farmer can profect them well and the dog can hear and recognise their name, apparently.

I have a plump, dozy labrador called Dolly. It suits her!

PeggySioux · 28/03/2008 14:01

'project', not profect.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 28/03/2008 14:01

We have a Bertie (Bertram if you want to be formal), he's a very aristocratic black Great Dane. A proper dog needs a proper name. If we called him 'Doodles' or 'Sausage' he'd leave home in disgust.

We have Boris and Percy, who are Boston Terriers and Della the Dachshund.

GeekBoy · 28/03/2008 15:05

call it something with two syllables! Helps the dog distinguish its name from what it's being told.. ...hadn't thought about it until before I got my dog (black lab that I trained as a gun-dog).

LittleB · 30/03/2008 12:41

I have a toller called Rhubarb, it suits him as hes pretty daft!
Friends and families dogs are named as follows;
Flat coat reteiver - Murphy
Cocker spaniel - Bailey, dusty, charlie
GSD - Stanley, Merlin
Collie - Kip(kipper), scamp, marley, fern, tolly, jodie, reg
Fox terriers - gertie, henry, daisy
Retriever - dylan, duke, willow, tess, misty
Springer - max
Sheltie - meg
bull terrier - dexter
We also shortlisted marmite and snoopy, but as I've said we like daft names for dogs!

bethoo · 30/03/2008 12:43

my boxers are called Thor and Zeus, into mythology. my nexxt dog will be called Odin i think depending on his breed of course.

ScienceTeacher · 30/03/2008 13:49

We have a cocker spaniel, and she was invariably called sod during her very long chewing and pooing stage. Her name is Mindy. We wanted an American name.

MuffinMclay · 30/03/2008 13:59

I think Humphrey would make a fab dog name!

Can't imagine yelling Horace when out and about on a walk though. It doesn't sound doggy.

I have a Freddie (springer spaniel). It does suit him, but I couldn't say why.

Also known as Little Freddie Bundle, in my soppier moments and in the privacy of my own home (dh thinks I'm totally nuts) harking back to when he was a tiny cute puppy. He is no longer in any way little or a bundle.

cameroonmama · 30/03/2008 14:28

We have a girl Heinz 57 puppy coming tonight and have no idea what to call her, after seeing your names I quite like Mindy. We shall also get a male dog which ds1 already wants to call Frank! If we go for Mindy it may be difficult to avoid the temptation of calling the male dog Mork

7monthsplus · 30/03/2008 14:46

Hi, I have 2 jack russell terriers.. one is called Stinker-le Bell Or just Stinker.. the other we did not name was called Toby so we and the vet call him Tobias Ap Diesel, toby for short.. His dad was called diesel..
