How do I stop my hamster from using the tunnel that goes around the outside of her cage, as a toilet?

She is lovely but very fast and very shy.

Give her a jam jar to use?

Really? Will save the next jar we use up. Do I need to put anything in it?

No. At least my hamster just used it, and I got the tip from a friend who has had loads and they all use it as a toilet. Very easy to clean out too .

I have just finished looking after my friends hamster for a week and it does exactly the same, despite having a toilet complete with hamster litter.
They poo and wee so often I 'm not sure that they can help themselves!

Ours always did it in its tube too - I found it easier, as I could just pull the tube off, empty it, and put it back on - instead of cleaning out the whole cage.

Thanks.

ITHINK (but may well be wrong) that if this is where their toilet it they will always use it as such if it is accessable. Hamsters are very much creatures of habit and need to be got into the right habit from the start. The only thing that you could do is remove the tunnels for a week or so, and put some of the wee-ridden sawdust into a jamjar as Vanilla suggests, then re-introduce the tunnels once the new toilet is established.

The tunnel has to stay as the cage didn't come with spare portholes. Hamster will be escaping if I took the tunnel off!
