I am considering one or two kittens...is two better than one?

And how much should I budget for to get them innoculated and neutered etc?

I would personally get two-twice the expense but three times the fun!
It is cheaper to get boy cats neutered (about £40) than female cats spayed (nearer £80 ish).
Innoculations will cost you about £40-£50-these are only rough costs as vets do vary.
If you are on a low income, the PDSA and Blue Cross do a low cost scheme.
Also,if you were to get a pair of rescue kittens they may already have had their vaccinations.

Am very jealous-you will have so much fun!

Oh thanks for that Whoosh...SIL's cat is pregnant and I am pondering asking for kittens...her cats are lovely!

How much would cat food & litter cost, do you have any idea? And are there any other costs I have forgotten to ask about?

Well if you live somewhere you can fit a catflap, you won't need litter for long. It's not hugely expensive but I owuld definitely recommend a litter tray with a hood.As small and cute as kittens are-they can make some horrendous smells
You will need flea treatment every three months or so-probably about £6.
Cat food can vary hugely-I personally prefer to give mine free access to dried complete food such as Iams or science diet-about £12 a bad which will last a couple of week for two adult cats. All supermarkets do their own brand now though which will be much cheaper.Just make sure they are the "complete" ones-not something like Go Cat which is just crunchy biscuits to be given in addition to wet food.
My cats get wet food as a treat.
Ping pong balls and bits of screwed up paper will keep them amused for hours but you may find they like shinning up your curtains too.....
If I think of anything else, will let you know.

When are the kittens due?

CountryGirl2007 · 27/03/2008 23:41

Definitely get 2, they are company for each other and can play together etc.

Also, please get your SIL to neuter/spay her cat ASAP! there are already hundreds of thousands of unwanted cats and kittens needing homes without even more being born!

DarthVader · 28/03/2008 07:45

Well you are right on that one. SIL is shockingly irresponsible & unfortunately telling her does no good .

Not sure when kittens are due as I have only just started entertaining the idea! Sounds like 2 is a good idea then?

I would get two, we have two cats which we had from kittens and they are great company and always snuggle up together for a nap.

Get two!! We did, in November, and I adore them. And they adore each other; I think they would have really missed each other (brothers) if they had been separated.

bossybritches · 29/03/2008 11:29

Ditto for two- they are such fun together & far les trouble than we thought they'd be & our two dogs adore them now too!!

CountryGirl2007 · 30/03/2008 19:07

Hmm, maybe you could do a bit of cat-napping and a quick trip to the vets the next time she goes on holidays then.....

Is she planning on neutering the kittens before she rehomes them?
