My cat only has two bites of her food and walks off

Hello

My cat has started not eating as much, she will go over to her food & eat a few bites and walk off. She's so tiny as it is, I took her to the vet and they said everything is fine and she's not under weight.

But I'm still worrying as she hardly eats! Does anyone know why this could be? I've gave her different food to give her different options and same with everything!

She's fine in herself, very playful etc, she's 3 this year.
She hasn't been neutered yet, could this be why? Maybe she's stressed, I have booked her in to be neutered for end of this month.

She lives here with her sister, who on other hand is a lot bigger and eats anything!

So stressful

Thanks

She's eating nicer food elsewhere

emlouba · 09/02/2024 17:37

@anythinginapinch she's a house cat 😂

Is it possible she's eating at night? My DMs cat only ate then

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/02/2024 18:16

As you haven't got her spayed so far, it's likely she's coming into season.

Or she's just pissed off with the scramble for food and would be happier with her bowl being up and away from the other cat.

CMOTDibbler · 09/02/2024 18:58

One of mine does this, and then comes back later and shouts for more when her brother has eaten it. So I just give her a couple of teaspoons at a time

Jowak1 · 09/02/2024 19:49

My young cat Beatrix has never been one for eating all her food at once- she goes over when I put it down has a few bites then wanders off. I think some cats are more like grazers going back over time to it rather than eating it all I none go.

emlouba · 09/02/2024 20:56

Ok thanks all, really hard as if I leave down, her sister will eat it! So I have to keep putting up on side and putting back down when she comes along and she still doesn't eat it. Maybe she just eats tiny little portions at a time, she used to eat a lot more.
I'm hoping she will change once been sprayed.
She has had a varied selection of food, very fustrating as makes you worry about them - she has 100% lost some weight and she was small before. Vet said she's fine though and not under weight. But like I said I am hoping she changes when she's been sprayed. Thanks everyone x

Why isn't she spayed at three years old?

eurochick · 10/02/2024 12:33

One of mine was incredibly tiny until she was spayed. She was over a year when it was done due to vet closures because of Covid and the vet was a bit hesitant about doing it because she was so tiny. She is now a chunk.

emlouba · 10/02/2024 16:00

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts I just didn't think to as I didn't know she had to be (my fault really for not knowing knowledge behind it all) but I'm hoping once she is - she will be better

@eurochick oh this is such good news to me, I hope the same happens with mine. X

She should be - all my females have put on weight once they've been neutered - in some cases, too much weight Grin

Wishicouldthinkofagoodone · 10/02/2024 16:15

Mine lost so much weight coming into season it nearly killed her.

the rescue she was with tried to get her to a decent weight for surgery, but in the end had to go for it as it was 50:50 whether the surgery at that weight or seasons killed her.

fortunately she survived and still drops weight at the slightest upset, but we can keep her reasonably stable.

get her neutered. You also will protect against pyometra and cancer.

SmithfamilyRobinson · 10/02/2024 16:16

Hmmm. Are you giving her Felix? A while ago when they appeared to change supplier, Dcat was very indifferent to her wet food. There was quite a fuss about this on Facebook. The waste was bad so eventually I got her onto Untamed. They do a trial box. She also has biccies which satisfies her grazing.

Goldenthigh · 10/02/2024 16:17

I have a tiny female cat who is just the same, no more than 2 bites then wanders off. She's 8 or 9 now (rescue cat) and spayed many years ago so it might not make any difference. She's a bit of a grazer so largely prefers dry food, although she has access to both.
you've been very lucky she hasn't escaped when in season! We had a kitten who came into season before she'd been spayed (about 4 months old) and she BASHED the locked cat flap out of the door to escape and mate. Don't you get male cats hanging around yowling?

sleekcat · 10/02/2024 16:23

One of my cats goes through phases of doing this. I did find out that he had been sneaking in through next door's cat flap and eating their cat's food! But you say she's losing weight, so probably not that. I test my cat by cooking - chicken and seeing how enthusiastic he is - if he wants to eat that I don't worry. I sometimes put bits of chicken on top of his regular food that he has refused, because he will then often be encouraged to eat it all. He doesn't weigh as much as my other cat, but he has a slim build and I don't think he's meant to.

aitchteeaitch · 10/02/2024 16:45

I suggest you get her booked in to be spayed as soon as possible. She might be a house cat, but when they are in season the wanderlust is overwhelming, and all it takes is one slightly open window!

Might I also suggest that you try feeding them out of sight of one another. One of mine can be a bit food-shy and is easily put off.

emlouba · 10/02/2024 19:58

Thank you so much everyone, it's been really helpful. She's booked to get sprayed so I'm really hoping maybe she will be back into her food after!
And I do put their food on opposite sides of room, but I may try different rooms maybe! Her sister has definitely gained weight since being sprayed! Xx

Could it be she simply doesn't like the food? Could you try a different brand?

Caterina99 · 10/02/2024 20:12

We have one single female housecat (spayed as a kitten) and she is tiny and doesn’t really eat much. One pouch of food a day, but it takes her all day to eat it, and she has dry food too that’s kept topped up.

Seems perfectly healthy, not underweight, she’s just a grazer. And fortunately she can be as there’s no other animals to eat her food.

(My DBs cat on the other hand will wolf down 2 pouches per meal and about half a sack of dry food, but he is an active young male cat!)

emlouba · 10/02/2024 20:51

@ChocHotolate I've changed it so many times to lots of different ones, I find one she likes and then she stops again, but seems to be with everything at the moment! Hoping it changes after she's sprayed. She's so small it worries me, but vet told me she's all healthy and not under weight. Going to get her done and see what happens x

OP posts:
emlouba · 10/02/2024 20:53

@Caterina99 oh really - yes this was what Nala was like, she would take forever to eat hers but now it's literally a bite here and there then nothing! I may start keeping her in a separate room when she eats and see how she gets on with that. It's so stressful as like your partners cat, that's my other cat! She would eat anything and everything - she's always hungry!! Xx

How much does she actually weigh? Just wondering if she just looks leaner in comparison with her chunky sister?
