Help- stressing out!

DH just casually mentioned that the dog just ate some Christmas cake that he had dropped onto his lap. I’ve immediately panicked because I made the cake and know for a fact there’s raisins, sultanas and a heck of a lot of brandy in it. He’s now backtracking and telling me I’m worrying over nothing and all the dog did was “lick his lips” and he didn’t eat anything at all. I don’t want to have to go to the vets if we don’t have to, but I’m really worried- Google is ranging from VETS NOW to it would take more than one to cause poisoning and liver failure.

Dog is a miniature Dachshund, 6.2kg and has form for eating literal 💩 and being fine afterwards. I’m so mad as he knows the dog shouldn’t be eating things like that and he’s just told me to shut up as I’ve started to panic.

DH need to be completely honest with how much he's eaten. And I would ring the Vets now and talk to them. My DDog ate some cake with raisin in earlier in the year. We didn't know until hours later and she was really quite unwell at night. It cost us £300 and that was without the Emergency Vet.

As PP said, you need to know how much the dog has eaten. Was it icing from the cake or fruit?

Then ring your vet, the quicker the dog is seen the better.

The trouble with raisins is that we never know whether a dog will be affected or not (many people will come on and say "mine was just fine"), even a small quantity can cause major problems.

Thanks both. DH is adamant that he didn’t actually eat any (despite saying he did to start with) and is saying it’s overreacting to take him to the vets at this time when he “hasn’t eaten anything”. I’ve just booked a video appointment with a vet we have through our insurance to get some advice. I didn’t see what happened so I have no idea if he’s had any or not.

My DH equally thought I was overreacting. DDog was really very ill a few hours later. It was the only time she's ever woken me up because she was poorly.

Thank you all- I made an appointment with our video vet and he has said as it was 90 mins ago and the dog has been fine, playing and his usual self so far, he would recommend monitoring at home for the next 24 hours but to go to the vets if there’s any concerns through the night.

Hope he's been ok through the night Flowers

@PinkMimosa thank you! He seems okay so far! His usual self- wanting lots of cuddles and attention! We’re keeping a very close eye on him ❤️
