Should I call the RSPCA?

My friend is in the process of breaking up with her (D)H. Getting ducks in a row, gathering strength etc. He knows it's coming, it's not a surprise.

DCs and both parties still in the family home.

He's just gotten a new puppy.

It's a very toxic situation, with DCs in the middle of it all being used as pawns, an all round acrimonious split. Completely crazy situation in which to add in a new puppy - apart from anything else, DCs are suffering from neglect verging on abuse, and as the split progresses, it's unclear where DCs will live, never mind the puppy.

We're convinced the puppy is the new pawn in the power game - a way to gain affection from the DCs and one more asset to be fought over. The puppy cannot be cared for properly in a situation like this.

If we called the RSPCA, would they enter the home? They're likely to see how the DCs are living too. Would they notify SS - is that in their remit?

If the puppy is having its basic needs met the RSPCA will not be interested.

Unless they are neglecting to feed it, get it medical attention and are beating it the RSPCA won’t get involved. If the kids are being neglected report that though.

Don't be ridiculous.

If you have concerns for the children, put a report in via NSPCC or direct to Social Services. However your friend will be part of any investigation. What neglect is she allowing to happen?

Lougle · 20/12/2023 12:36

Does the puppy have food, water, she shelter? If so, the RSPCA can't do anything.

caringcarer · 20/12/2023 12:37

You sound more concerned for this new puppy than DC who you say are neglected. Report the neglect of DC.

SpaghettiSauceOnTheCarpet · 20/12/2023 12:42

If puppy is being fed and watered I doubt RSPCA will visit. Certainly monitor the situation. What you are saying about the children being neglected bordering on abuse is much more concerning. Who is neglecting them? Are the parents still together and both are neglecting the children? Is there immediate danger to them? You should be reporting that to the social services.

No immediate danger to the DCs - just not a good situation in which to introduce another mouth to feed. The DCs situation will change imminently and we are supporting the fallout from the split.

But to introduce one more variable at this very delicate stage is madness.

Noted ref RSPCA interest. Will monitor the situation.

It doesn’t matter that he’s introduced a new puppy into a precarious situation. If the puppy isn’t being abused (and the threshold is frustratingly high) they won’t be interested in the slightest.
