Ok in about 18month times we will proabbly get a dog . Both Dh and I have always wanted a dog , both brough up with labradors.

Have always though about a lab , but now DH is thinking about a Husky .

I know nothing about these dogs nor know anyone who has one .

So pros and cons if anyone out there knows anything .. by the time we get a dog our DSs will be close to 7 & 9 yrs .

I work partime , term time only so it would be left alone for part of the day , we have a big garden and close to good dog walking areas i.e open space

Maybe you should try fostering all different breeds/types of dogs and then decide which one you like best. bonuses are, you'll probably make a more informed decision for yourself and you will be helping needy dogs as well, win win situation!

If you want a family pet...I would suggest going to a rescue and letting the dog choose you!! Out of the 50 or so dogs we took in over the years I would say I only placed 5 or so with kids. Most of them were fine with kids but were not "family pets" IYKWIM.

I personally love yellow labs and I have one but a friend of mine was attacked by hers quite badly a couple of years ago so it just goes to show that generalising breeds is quite an unsafe way of doing things.

Ohh just wanna add....all of the dogs we placed with families were in fact cross breeds. Lab/Alsation were 3 of them.

Sorry your all barking mad! Do you all own huskies? How can you comment on something you know nothing about 1st hand? We own a husky and he's treated the same way as any other family breed of dog! Yes he's a little stubborn but aren't we all, yes he's energetic and playful but knows his place! I'm sick of people frowning upon owning a husky as a pet and you can "never let them off the lead" is this not true of ALL dogs and ALL breeds?

A family up the road from us have one. I saw the mum being dragged along the street by him a few months back. He took off running after a cat and she just was unable to hold him back. Luckily a police man was coming down the street and grabbed him and was strong enough to hold him. Have not seen her out with him since.

Huskies really aren't pets. They are bred to run 20 miles plus a day with a sled behind them. If you can give that kind of lifestyle, great. If not, don't get one. I've lost track of the number of Huskies I know who have to be rehomed. If you look at rescues you will see that they frequently have them because people can't handle them.

Bella talks sense.
Too many people get these dogs because they like the look of them or see them as some kind of status symbol. These are a specialist breed and need lots of exercise and stimulation. If you can supply that then great but if not then steer clear.

I'm pretty confident that the people who wrote this list of bad points about the breed have more Sibe experience than anyone on this thread and know exactly what they're talking about.

Whilst there will always be anomalous individuals (the whippet with absolutely no prey drive, the Sibe with excellent recall, the working line terrier that is excellent with small furries) there will always be certain traits which are highly likely to be present in dogs of certain breeds. If there weren't then we wouldn't have created different breeds to do different jobs for us, there's a reason farmers use border collies to herd sheep and not labradors...... Yes, you'll get the odd Sibe that is perfectly happy as a total couch potato but if that's what you're looking for in a dog then, unless you're looking at an adult rescue whose character is already known, it's daft to consider getting a breed that is highly likely to be the opposite of everything you want.

As has been said, Sibes are really a very specialist breed and the vast majority are not suitable for the average pet home. There's a reason why there are so many dumped on rescue right around the time they hit adolescence and start causing trouble because they're not getting the exercise and outlets they need to keep them content.
