all 7 of them

went to feed them at 11:45am and they were all gone, just a lot of feathers near then fence. I eventually found the tamest one lying on the neighbouring field with a broken neck, no trace of the others.

FFS It's the second time this has happened - 1.5 years ago we had another entire flock wiped out in one go, too.

This lot was so tame - they'd run up to you to be stroked.

Dd1 is bereft. I guess an eglu is the only answer. The idea of confining them in such a small run has never appealed though.

i think the concrete slab base with easibed covering sounds great. after the first few fox raids, i'll no doubt be doing that too

Really sorry geekgirl

My Eglu is arriving tomorrow morning. Will be creating a permanent base with slabs as recommended.

Oh No what a bummer.
generally we do ok here in the country, are you all in a town/city?

geekgirl · 10/03/2008 22:26

ingles, am in Yorks. Dales . As I said it's happened to us before not so long ago - but my friend has a farm just 1 mile up the road and has only ever had one fox attack (on a lamb, they're sheep farmers) in decades so I guess in my case it's bad luck.

It does seem to be much worse in cities though - I've only ever seen a fox here at night.

megalegs/geekgirl - Our children are fine with electric fencing. The shock isn't that great and they soon learned not to touch it. As did the dog! We have strand fencing for ponies etc but there is a mesh-version available for poultry.

We lost a lot of birds, mostly during the day last year, though I did open the henhouse door one morning to find 6 headless hens. New birds are now in a large run with 12ft high fences.
