Fleas 😞

Bloody fleas!!! We thought the dog was the problem til we actually looked a bit closer at the cat and he's crawling with them and flea dirt ffs.

How long does it take to get rid?!

Also please critique our approach and tell me if we're doing anything wrong or should be doing something different or any tips?!

-Washing pets once a day, flea combing twice a day
-Theyve had spot ons and daily safe flea spray
-Have hoovered, steamed and sprayed our sofa, living room chair and rug.
-Have hoovered and steamed our upstairs carpet (laminate downstairs) bed frame as it's fabric
-Binned our bedding
-Binned the dogs bedding
-Hoovered and sprayed the cat tree

-In the process of washing practically all of our clothes
-Today will hoover and wash all hard floors
-Repeat all the above and bleach the bathroom

FFS we're due to move soon. This is all we (and our new homeowners!!) need.

Indorex for the house. Also stop washing the dog! You are washing off any flea treatments!

@OhhhhhhhhBiscuits I was under the impression that it kind of got into their system so to speak, and didn't just work topically. Equally we're washing in the morning and treating at night so there's a full 12-18hrs. Is that not long enough?

What the hell are you using ti treat your dogs? No way should you be treating them daily with flea products.

What have you exactly used in the house and on the dogs?

I feel your pain, it's such a horrible, dirty feeling to have fleas in the house.
Our dog had fleas so I'm not sure if it's the same type of fleas that lives on cats?

We got flea treatment from the vet (had been using the one you buy in the pet shop but it clearly wasn't strong enough.) This killed the life cycle of the fleas so they started jumping off the dogs (bleugh!) We used indorex on the sofas in the kitchen, replaced their bedding and then just kept hoovering and mopping for a couple of weeks. They were actually easy enough to get rid of.

Best of luck!

Firstly, I feel your pain because when we got our then kitten, we didn't realise they were full of fleas and I was ready to move house! 🤣
Make sure you go to a vet and get a decent flea treatment, not an off the shelf one. We then vacuumed constantly but make sure to empty it each time. Washed all soft furnishings/bedding/clothes etc. Anything that didn't move got washed!!!
And then Indorex. I spent a small fortune on the stuff but it was worth it.
Get a dish with soapy water in and a nit comb and regularly comb through and put the fleas in the water.

It takes a while but you should get there once the cycle is broken. Good luck!

You should wash the dog within 48 hours of a spot on treatment - that is 48hours before and 48 hours after.

dementedpixie · 29/10/2023 21:06

Stop washing your pets as you will be washing off what you're putting on them

Use a vet treatment rather than over the counter stuff

I feel for you, we also have a dog and a cat and fleas are a nightmare! We recently had a bout of fleas and we've been using Frontline for ages. Turns out animals can develop immunity to frontline so we've decided to switch to Strongplus Plus which you can only get from the vets or on a prescription. Has worked wonders - apparently it's stronger and kills off flea eggs too. We just get a prescription from the vets (around £22) and buy online!

We got flea and worm tablets from the vets in the end. Used spot on for 2 months (so 2 cycles) and they came and went until then. Only ever saw 3/4 on the dogs - nowhere else and they’d disappear then come back a few days later. And vacuumed pretty much every day and emptied the Hoover every day. Didn’t use indorex as couldn’t keep the dogs out of the way for long enough and also was a bit worried about the baby who was crawling

weve used the tablets from the vets ever since and never had a return. I think they either get immune to it or it’s not strong enough

Fleas have been a nightmare this year for some reason.
As well as getting treatment from the vet you can also use capstar. Vet recommended this to me, you can get it on amazon. It kills all live fleas within a few hours. It doesn't kill the eggs but wil help to break the cycle. This has worked well for me- along side flea treatment, washing everything and flea bombs around the house.
