ok getting a girl cocker spaniel in 10 days time. How best to deal with toilet training at night time? If you dont want to paper train ive read that you shoudl set your alarm for a couple of times in the night to go down and let them out? Also not sure how to deal with puppy plus dd (4.3)in terms of when she's playing with her toys. Dont want to shut puppy away (we've got a crate) all the time dd is playing. Any advice or tips wuld be great. Puppy will be 9 weeks when we get her

We got our puppy a week ago (a staffordshire bull terrier). She sleeps in the conservatory, we bought her a crate and put her bed in it.
For the first few nights she cried like a baby but now she only cry's for a minute and then settles.

We are still trying to master the toilet training, she's only 9 weeks old so still has'nt had her 2nd jab, once she has had her jab i will be walking her which will help. She does do a wee outside but still wee's on the floor sometimes.

I let her out before we go to bed, i'm to lazy to get up in the night so we leave newspaper down for her.

thats the other thing - crying or barking at night - do you just ignore - which i expect is best but always unsure because dd's room is above kitchen where pup will be

We have had our puppy since the end of November, he is a curly coated retriever. He is crate trained and you will find that the puppy won't want to go to toilet in her crate. We found that when ours cried in the night we got up and let him out, bit like you do with children, we didn't really talk to him apart from giving him a treat when he performed!

for the first two weeks or so he did wee in his crate, but soon did everything outside, he is now 5 months old and slleps through the night (about 8-9 hours). It helps if you feed at the same time eaxh day to establish a elimination routine.

As far as your DD is concerned, it will amaze you how quickly they adapt to each other, i have a ds of 5. they are inseparable now.

Just teach your puppy the no command but eqaually as important teach your dd that the when the puppy is in his crate he does not want to be disturbed, and that she is not to go in there at all. Make sure you puppy has his own toys as well, if he does go to get your dd toys tell her NO and give her one of her own toys and praise her.

Mainly have fun with her. I hope i haven't been teaching you to "suck eggs" so to speak.
Sorry if i have.

Hope that helps.

yes, you should ignore crying, unless it is persistent (over 5-10mins) as it might mean she needs to do her bussiness, even though it will be inside for a few weeks.

thanks jo i thought that the best way with toys was to say no and give her one of hers. What time do you give the last meal?

I found with my puppy, if i feed him before 7.30 at night he is up wanting the toilet at 5.30am, so i feed him around 8.30-9.00 but due to his size and breed he eats alot during the day. He is on dry food only and now eats aroung 500g a day. he now has it divided into two meals as thats what suits him, but your puppy might be different as she will be tiny, she will probavly need to eat more frequently.

Our boy was eating evry four-ish hours during waking time. So 8,12,4 and 8.30 is what he did at 9 weeks. you puppy might need 5-6 smaller meals a day. your breeder should be able to tell you what she is doing at the moment.
