Can't afford my cat anymore

In a nutshell my cat has epilepsy (3 years old) has done since he was 8 weeks old. Lovely cat but the expense of medication is crippling us and I'm now having to think if we can afford to keep him. Don't get me wrong I love this cat but with COLC and 3 children it's a struggle. We pay £41 a month for the phenobarbital and £60 every 3 months for the levetiracetam. Pet insurance is also a high £35 a month due to his claim from reacurrent seizures that were uncontrollable from 2 years ago (they are now managed). We cannot stop this type of medication as he will seizure and it's heart wrenching to see. I just don't know what to do :( my children would never forgive me if we had him put down but how can we carry on like this? We can't give him away as no one would pay what we pay every month for a cat, especially one they don't love/know well. Please no judgement feeling very wobbly at the moment about this.

I’m not getting why not a go fund me or just giving either? I go on there occasionally. Chuck a tenner into a few things. Makes me feel good. Hopefully helped someone out. Plenty of generous anonymous donors who give quite a lot.

That’s why I said do a small target at a time. When OP reaches the end of the time period they can update the target and those who have donated will get notification again. You might get lucky and find you only need one generous donor to sponsor tbh.

If you do decide to pts, perhaps you could say the cat was sick, had a very bad fit and you took him to the vet but he couldn't be saved. I would stop the insurance but then I've always aelf-insured. I am sorry things are so tight but £1200 is a lot per year on a cat.

@namestevalian how can you get prescription drugs from abroad? Any links for websites? Thanks.

You could definitely try a local cat charity, the one near us will take cats like these if owners can't keep them and then Foster them out. My friend had a cat who was having regular medication she was fostering him.

They maybe also able to help you with costs.

£1200 a year for medication for a cat is ridiculous.
Get him put to sleep, tell the kids it’s gone to live on a farm, and get another, healthy, cat.

Vets and veterinary meds are so expensive now. There is a government investigation into these I believe, but whether (and when) it will make any difference, who knows? I am in a similar position with mine, between them they cost a fortune. My income has dropped a lot, and I’ve had to accept that it’s either pets or holidays / new clothes / Eating out etc. So, I have cats but very little else! DD gets to go away and go out with her dad (my ex), so it’s only me that misses out at least.
