Black specks in kitten fur

I got a kitten from a friend yesterday, she said she hadn't taken it to a vet yet, as it was given to her by a neighbor who had to urgently leave for some time. Anyway, i called the vet after getting it home, due to take this morning but the kitten was nowhere to be found!! It was hiding in a closet, but had to cancel the appt. This evening I noticed the kitten was quite itchy, and then I've seen some black specks in its fur. I gave it a bath with washing up liquid (read that it can help with fleas), I also found 5 adult fleas on the poor kitten! I removed them and flushed them down the toilet. I'll call the vet tomorrow to book an appt asap, but now I'm worried that it might have started a flea infestation in my house!! I've tripled checked the kitten's whole body, it seems there aren't any fleas left on it, at least visible ones.

I'll get some indorex tomorrow to spray on the house too. I'm quite worried about a house infestation though, how likely is that to happen? Any similar experience that didn't end up with full blown infestation??

Calm down, it’s five fleas on a kitten. Get the right treatment from the vet ( would YOU want to bathed in washing up liquid?) and use it regularly. You do not need to treat the house,
If you have a cat, that cat will occasionally get fleas, you need to get used to that idea unfortunately.

We have had a dozen cats over the years, we have five cats now. Can always find a flea or two if we look, but we have Advantage spot on ( from Amazon) and we treat once a month to keep under control.

Fleas can kill a kitten

I've had cats for years and they don't have, and never have had, fleas. We use Advocate. Advantage now is useless at controlling them which is why it's not prescription only.

How old is the kitten and how much and what us it eating? It will need to be checked by a vet, deflead and dewormed, immediately. The vet will explain when it needs its vaccinations and to be neutered.

They can get into carpets yes. Can you keep the kitten in non carpet area until treated?

I seem to remember when I had a cat she had an injection every six months at the vets. It was very effective but not sure if kittens can have them. Yes to a vets appointment for a general check up.
