Cat fights!

My parents have a running battle going on. One protagonist is a 7 yr old neutered tom, been with them from kittenhood. 3 months ago they accepted as an emergency resue a 3 yr old spayed female. They just don't like each other and spit and fight apart from when being fed, when they are too busy to notice each other.
Both go outside, using a cat flap, but they cannot tolerate being in the same room. The boy is much bigger, but the girl is more agressive.
We'd be etrnally grateful for any advice.
Anyone got any ideas?

No ideas but will be watching this thread with interest as i have a 3 year old male and a 1 year old female who fight all the time when both in the house and it is driving me insane!

Feliway diffuser may be helpful - helps calm cats a bit. Probably not going to entirely solve the problem though.

I have brother and sister cats that I have had for 4 years and they don't like each other. One lives upstairs and one down, they hiss when they see each other and occasionally fight. Mostly they stay out of each others way.

They did sleep together when they were kittens but once they grew up, it's been war! I have never thought that there might be something I could do about it......

Thanks for these. This is Itsazoo's DAD. LazyLPJ . Your prob. seems just the same as ours.
We'll just have to wait and hope!

I have been doing some reading and it looks like they may just be fighting to try and sort out the pecking order. If this female cat is particularly aggressive, she may be threatening your established cat's territory.

I have read that those cat tree things can be good, the ones that have a scratching post type thing in the middle and different levels, as they choose their own level and stick to it, it becomes their territory.

Sometimes my cats unite against a common enemy, when we first brought our puppy home for instance but I think I am just waiting for them to get old and too lazy to fight

Sorry about lack of response, internet has been down. We'll definately try the cat tree, will let you know if it helps!

they usually learn to coexist! If they can't, one may move out (one of ours did! Went to live with a neighbour!!) Cats won't stay where they aren't happy! good luck

I read something about putting butter on the back of their heads to make the other lick them. Something about mutual grooming being a good way to bond.
