Litter tray stinks house out

Cat very old and confused and requires litter tray indoors now but I hate the smell of poo as we open front door.
Is there a litter tray that masks odours or something I can do as I know if I can smell it as soon as door open anyone else is going to smell it a lot more.
I hate the house smelling of poo and embarrassing if visitors arrive unexpectedly.

Mix bicarb in with the litter.
Get a hooded tray with a flap.
Deodorised litter (although some cats refuse to use it).
Remove any mess immediately and put in outside bin.
There are very expensive automated litter trays but they are ££££.

Are you cleaning the litter tray several times a day? I’m puzzled as to why it smells so bad unless you’re not cleaning it often. I have 4 cats and 4 litter trays and my house never smells and they all use the trays despite being able to go outside.

SuperGinger · 14/07/2023 16:20

We have a very old cat who now uses a litter tray. I find the covered box best and use the wooden pellet cat litter. As soon as she does a poo I remove it, pop it in one of those dog poo bags and leave it just outside the front door, then when I go out the house I put it into a dog litter bin nearby. Not ideal but it doesn't get smelly. I change the litter completely every five days and wash out the litter tray with boiling water and fairy liquid, then rinse it with the hose pipe and dry it. Massive faff but odour free. I use about 5L of litter each time. Good luck🍀

Your house probably does smell and you are just used to it.
It's an unpleasant smell even if in some houses it isn't that strong.

OP I think you need to be removing anything deposited in it as soon as its been done or as soon as you can.
That's the best you can really do.

What food is your cat on? I ask because some food results in smellier poos than others. Felix, Whiskas etc worst culprits.

Grain free food equals very little smell. My cat has grain free dry food and no smell.

violetskies56 · 14/07/2023 16:26

i find that recycled paper litter helps to mask the smell in my house as i have indoor cats and 3 litter trays in total for them, it can be somewhat expensive but i get a 30L every month and it lasts most of the month. clean any poo as soon as you can, clean the whole tray out every 3 days depending on how quickly it fills (get rid of all litter and wash tray as ammonia smell can build up on the tray). you can also get litter trays with hoods on :)

AgnesX · 14/07/2023 16:28

I've got got an indoor cat (aged and arthritic). You need to clear the tray every day, more than once where possible. New fresh litter every fortnight at a minimum. More than one tray also helps

If it's just one cat and it stinks that's odd. Have you taken it to vet for a checkup to make sure it doesn't have an infection.

Yes clean out tray every time.
Also I agree with one of other posters that sometimes pet owners become immune to smells in their own environment as familiar.
Unfortunately even though I have had cats most of my grown life I can smell poo.

I have tried other food but this is what they were fed when I adopted them years ago and they leave other food.

Which litter do you use? I find Catsan very good and much better odour-wise

Felix

Try fry food or food with a higher meat content.

whirlyhead · 14/07/2023 17:03

For all those people saying I must be used to the smell - I often have other people come into the house who observe that with all my cats they are amazed it doesn’t smell. I clean litter trays 2/3 times a day. Use litter freshener and worlds best cat litter which is fantastic. Open windows every day even in winter. Throw poo down the loo not in the bin. My nose works really well as I can instantly smell a stinky poo!

But I think my cats diet means they do non smelly poos.

I would think better to have a bit less litter and totally clean it out every few days. And wash the tray at the same time.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 14/07/2023 17:05

here

expensive but it lasts longer than other brands as it seems to absorb better and you use less

Someone suggested dry food..... although the better quality wet food and chicken (!) don't make much of a difference ime.

I don't have much carpet and clean the rugs I do have. That might help... now that I think about it that does make a difference especially in the colder months when the windows are closed.

This cat litter is amazing Okoplus Cats Best Original Clumping Cat Litter, 5 Litre (2.1 kg) https://amzn.eu/d/diQIXCr

Nclktnntt · 14/07/2023 17:15

Swap to a much better litter. We switched to cats best and never looked back. It masks odours amazingly, it clumps so you just scoop out the wee and can put it down the toilet, you also scoop out the poop and shake off the excess litter before throwing down the toilet.

You don't need to clean out the tray or change the litter so often - usually around 4-6 weeks. We do monthly for ease. It's not cheap - but lasts ages and therefore works out much more cost effective in the long run and saves you money.

Our cats also on katkin food - amazing food and their poos hardly smell! Well worth checking out.

SuperGinger · 14/07/2023 17:17

How can litter possibly last a fortnight? I have tried these other brands and did not like them. 😐

Is it safe to put down the toilet? I’d have thought it blocked pipes etc.

I think food is the answer too. My cat is fussy and likes whiskas, she stinks. The dog (Labrador) isn’t remotely fussy but her stomach is and she has to have quite an expensive wet food, she doesn’t smell at all.

I like this brand - but don't leave it longer than a week or so.

Food does play a role - we mix what they have as they are fussy and go off food and some brands do mean smellier poo - higher meat content and grain free is best but it's not always what they will eat.

SuperGinger · 14/07/2023 17:28

Mine is on Royal Canin Renal (aka a quick route to bankruptcy) and she pees a lot so we get the ammonia smell too.
