Older Cat with suspected overactive Thyroid he has a big appetite , surgery is out of the question due to his age .

The only solution is medication , can anyone advise how much this is and can I get it cheaper than the vets ? Or do I just carry on with him as he is ? . Obviously I want the best for him he is 17 .

I don't know wether to medicate or just carry on feeding him whenever he wants it . The vet says it's up to me .

You won't be able to carry on as he is unfortunately. I've had 2 cats with this and they struggled to maintain weight even on the medication eventually! Both were on the slinkier side!

I don't know the current cost as not had t buy since 2020! But I was able to obtain prescription from the vets and buy it cheaper online, and the difference was quite substantial!

Both my cats had a great quality of life while on the medication and both died of a very old age!

Untreated hyperthyroidism can cause heart problems, he probably doesn’t feel the best being so manic ether tbh.

Hey, my cat has the same issue, diagnosed at 13, shes 15 this year. She takes tablets twice a day. It's £60 for a month's supply, but I claim back on the insurance. Twice a year she needs bloods to review which is more but all covered by insurance. She recovered quickly and had no issues with the meds, she takes them really well now its in her routine.

She was incredibly poorly so I can't imagine not medicating to be honest. She dropped a lot of weight, her heart rate was out of control, dilated. Seems a pretty awful way to die, she's happy and comfortable now.

I had a cat with Hyperthyroidism and treated her with Thyronorm for 4 years.

Initially we got the medication from the vet but after a while worked out it was cheaper to get a prescription from the vets for approx £12 and then buy online from somewhere like Animed Direct. We got the vet to issue 2 bottles as well which helped.

Over time we did have to increase the dose, I think it worked out between £30-50 a month but it was worth it for us to give her that extra time and she got used to the medication really quickly.

I would 100% recommend it, it's not as daunting as it seems
