Hi. I have a lesson booked for next tuesday, it's at a really good school and im having half an hour and the cost is £35 which seems a lot to me. Just wondering how much everyone else pays..........

I've just looked at the website of a riding school I used to go to, which is a small friendly place but still with good standards of horse care/safety etc. They charge £28 for a 1/2 hr private lesson and £25 for a 1 hr group lesson (less for children). I expect 'posher' places with indoor schools/cross country facilities and suchlike charge more.
I have a freelance instructor who is helping me with my youngster so she rides him a bit herself and then I have a lesson on him. She is teaching me and my mum some Parelli too so all in all usually spends about an hour and charges £15. I think it's less than her normal charge because I have to collect her and then take her back to her yard afterwards. I had a 1/2 hr lesson on her dressage horse and that was £12.
Don't know if any of that is any help! A lot depends on where you are I think. I believe lessons in London are really expensive.

It is quite alot for half an hour, even if it is private... I think where I used to go it was about £25 for half an hour, maybe abit more for their top rider.

I have the price list here,
class lessons of 50 mins £28
Private, 50 mins, £45
50 mins shared x2 £35 each
30 mins private £35
30 mins shared x2 £30 each.

Plus £1 for hat and boot hire. I am having a 30 min private lesson to start to assess my riding and then maybe placed with someone else so we share.

The riding school where DS (18) goes is £28 1/2 hour private and £24 1 hour group, plus £1 for hat.

marmadukescarlet · 20/02/2008 18:56

£24 for children's private 30 mins

CountryGirl2007 · 21/02/2008 00:54

I used to pay around ?20 for an hours lesson or an hours trek.

Butkin · 21/02/2008 15:35

DD pays 15 pounds for 30 mins private or
12 pounds for 60 minutes group (4-6) - the latter organised by Pony Club in the evenings. On own ponies for both.

Don't know about adults but will have to find out soon when I start having lessons on my just broken in rising 4yo connemara.

dontwanttogetoutofbed · 21/02/2008 15:36

what age can you start riding lessons?

coolkat · 21/02/2008 15:44

My DD is five 1/2 hour on her own is £10.00. Really laid back arrangements but she is learning loads.

Christywhisty · 21/02/2008 15:49

Dd is having her first lesson on Sunday which is private and £22

Once she can cantor she will be allowed in group lesson which is 16.50

marmadukescarlet · 24/02/2008 10:52

Most reputable riding establishments will not take under 4 due to insurance.

As a life-long rider and keeper of ponies, I think weekly lessons are excessive until most reach 6. When they are strong enough, co-ordinated enough and generally focussed enough to really get to grips with it.

It is different when you keep them yourself, most of my friends have their 4 yr olds going to shows most summer weekends.

We potter about on ours playing and pootling through the orchards, DD has fortnightly lessons locally (8 yrs) as I am not the right temprament to teach her
and have no rosettete studded tack room aspirations (sob)

I am soooo shocked at the prices. It was fairly expensive when we searched a couple of years ago. About £20 i think

We have a share horse at a private livery and do three days a week and we pay £20 a week. We pay a girl there who is a qualified teacher £12 for an hours lesson once a week and then hack the other two days.

We are London based. We went through a site called stabletalk to find the share.

wheresthehamster · 24/02/2008 13:12

Our stables charge £20 per hour, £12 per half-hour. The stables up the road with the indoor arena and better facilities to maintain charge at least 50% more. This is home counties

warmsummersday · 26/02/2008 18:18

I have looked into a horse share but not many in my area. I would want my DD (5yrs old) to be able to ride it and me aswell so don't know how we would get around that?!

I had my lesson today, £35 later for half hour but it was really good, the instructor was lovely and talked me through everything. The center is ABRS approved and they do loads of courses and activity days. I felt relaxed there but it was alot of money and also want DD to start and can't really pay for both of us to go there.

dd has lessons in a group for £10 an hour. that is what dp has told me anway - he pays it! am [shocked] at £35 unless it is individual tuition.

oxocube · 26/02/2008 18:26

We are in Holland and the prices are so much better. I pay about 12 euros for a 1 hour group lesson in a very good school - there are typically about 7 kids in the group. If I remember correctly, private lessons are about 20 eu for 30 mins, semi-private (ie with one other person, about 24 per hour). I know we are very lucky.

oxocube · 26/02/2008 18:28

Our school starts taking kids from aged 7

warmsummersday · 26/02/2008 19:27

Oh yes it is private lesson. I want to book for next week but not sure if I should go else where.

I don't think that's too bad tbh, it very expensive running a riding school, and i certainly wouldn't suggest looking for the cheapest option. As a comparison, I take my own horse for lessons with my dressage instructor (use her sand school) and she charges £30 for about 40 minutes (Mare and I are totally dead by the end of that), my jumping trainer charges £25 for 30 mins, although that includes hire of the local indoor school and their excellent collection of jumps. This is in Yorkshire, and admittedly they are at the top of their game, but the prices are pretty standard.

PurpleFrog · 06/03/2008 15:54

dd (now age 10) started riding lessons last August. Prices where she goes are 30mins group lesson £10, 1 hr group lesson £17.50, 30mins lesson followed by 30mins hack £18.50.

She started with 30min lessons which never had more than 4 children. After 5 or 6 lessons we went to 1 hr lessons. As the weather was turning colder by then, she was often the only one in the group for one half of the lesson. Although, I was really pleased with the "private" lessons, dd found it a bit too tiring working hard for the whole hour and we opted for 30mins lesson followed by 30mins hack on the run up to Christmas. We have had a few months break now and I really will have to phone up to book again.

PurpleFrog · 06/03/2008 15:56

I should have said that private lessons are £17.50 for 30mins and £27 for 1 hour.

warmsummersday · 06/03/2008 20:09

I had a 1 hour private lesson on tuesday and paid £46 and felt like I didn't learn anything! Think I am going to try somewhere cheaper!

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 06/03/2008 20:10

£17 private 30mins

Christywhisty · 12/03/2008 22:22

DD has started her lessons now and had a private first lesson, but now has a shared lesson with another girl which is £19.50 for 30 mins. DH used to have dressage lesson was very impressed with DD's instructor.

DS had some lessons in Holland at the Centerparcs site they were much cheaper, about 14 euros for a group lesson.
