AIBU to think this is cruel?

Today DS and I went to a pet shop because he's been really into small animals like hamsters etc lately and we don't really have money or time to buy one so he likes to go the shop and look at them.

We were out of our usual area today and went to a more shady-looking place. Once we entered, i instantly noticed a lonely chinchilla in a cage that was no more than half a metre wide and long covered in its own excrement.

We went further in and there were tiny cages with several bird crammed in, with enough space to fly around but still looked cruel. They seemed agressive as well, as over four different species were in the same small space and attacking each other.

I did some further research and discovered they have an animal license of 2 stars which is not great but still legal. Overall it still struck me as cruel and inhumane and i was wondering if there's anything i have the power to do about this situation

That sounds awful. I don’t know about the legality but I would call the rspca (if in England or wales) and also name and shame on fb. Get them closed!

Yeah it's in england. Is there much they can do if technically it's legal?

The local council issue licences. Contact them and tell them what you've said on here. It may be that they haven't been inspected for some time.

Not sure, but as @tailinthejam says, if you tell the council or rspca then they will be aware, at least. Can you try to get some photos perhaps? On the quiet, obv. In their own faeces would surely be actionable. If you want support we could maybe get writing in to the council, perhaps?

Local Trading Standard and RSPCA

Been looking at Google reviews and apparently RSPCA have visited before. Owners claim that it was because they left the shop unattended on a Sunday and the birds made a mess of their seeds. To let the birds be left so long they make a mess worthy of calling RSPCA makes me wonder why RSPCA left without doing anything about it

There are many stories of them not quite coming up to scratch and doing enough sometimes. I don’t know and would hope not, but maybe it’s difficult for them to take things further if there isn’t much evidence 😥

Find out which council they are licenced with and suggest the licencing officer does an on the spot inspection. We're licensed and ours can drop in when they like.
Just so you know though not much may come of it. A local rescue was reported to the RSPCA for the sheer amount of poop everywhere, the state the animals were kept in, and the lack of basic care. The RSPCA did nothing and now the waste can be smelled from the main road.

I hate how it's all based on laws and not the obvious state at first glance of the environment. A place could legally be ok but it really isn't good enough
