Kitten Pooing Outside the Litter Tray

I'm asking for a friend who's second kitten does this and they've tried so many tactics, but nothing is working for them. (Using a second hooded tray for them). The other sibling kitten does theirs fine in their own litter tray without issue. They're now 4 months old. I think they've used Feliaway and something else to no effect. Can someone suggest anything, please? Thanks.

NB. They've both been seen by the vets, been treated etc.

Ideally you need three litter trays for two cats - one each, plus a spare.

Some cats won't poo where they've peed - so they'll go into one tray, pee, then go to the other tray to poo thirty seconds later.

My 11 year old cat does this. She spends ages scraping the litter to just how she likes it, then hangs her arse over the edge of the tray. It's like she has no special awareness! If she does it in the tray she gets dreamies.

It wees in one tray and ignores the other. Poos on the floor without fail each time. Maybe, it doesn't like the other cat's tray nearby, I wonder? Thus, it's hindering the need to protect their privacy...?

If one kitten is using the litter tray without any problems, it's possible that the issue is not with the litter tray itself but with the other kitten's behavior or preferences. Here are some tips that may help:

  1. Make sure the litter tray is clean and is in a quiet and accessible location.
  2. Try a different type of litter. Some cats are picky about the texture or scent of the litter. Experiment with different types until you find one that your kitten likes.
  3. Try different litter tray designs. Some kittens may prefer a certain type of tray, such as one with a lower entry point or one without a hood.
  4. Use positive reinforcement to encourage the kitten to use the litter tray. When the kitten uses the tray, reward them with a treat or praise.

Yes, most likely. We have three cats and they all have different habits.

One doesn't care and will pee/poo in any of the trays on offer.

One pees and poos in separate trays but isn't bothered which one he uses for what, and he doesn't care if another cat has been in there first.

The third is really fussy - has to have a certain type of litter, won't pee or poo in the same tray and likes his privacy as well. He doesn't like going in a tray that another cat has used beforehand unless it's been cleaned out.
